i've been doing some searches and have read a few threads about bitch pins. when i got my swap, it had a lot of play in the shifter. so i thought the shop that did the swap had just replaced the pin with a nut and bolt. so i bought another one at a honda dealership and when i came to look at the shift linkage, there was already a pin there. so i replaced that pin, and at the same time, installed some new shift bushings. however, when everything was done, there was still lots of play in the shifter. is this normal?
sorry to bust your thread a little, but how much did you pay for the pin? i'm having the same problem, but i know mine is because i have a nut and bolt. i couldn't find the pin when i put the motor in
Have you tried tightening the bolt that goes through the bottom of the shift lever? My friend's car had a ton of side-to-side play in the shifter, and I just got under there and tightened that bolt up. Fixed it real quick. Just something to check...

i got this image from another H-T member Hybrid93Hatch:
could it be this part that causes the play? (because the joints could get old and get loose)?

If you have alot of side to side play in the shifter make sure to check the bushing where the shifter rod and shift linkage attach. If that bushing has excess play your shifter will have lots of side to side movement in or out of gear. HTH
when i got my swap done the guy that did it said that the shifter play was because there was a metal support (sorry to be so vague) around the old linkage that wouldn't fit with the new linkage. he tightened everything up as much as he could and said that that was the best it would get. i hope somebody tells me im wrong cause i hate shifter play.

yeah i replaced the bushings and tightened everything up and there is no excess play in the bushing, yet there is still play in the shifter.

Believe it or not, the reason you have alot of play is probably because you are using an si shift linkage. Myself and a couple other guys had the same problem and when we changed the linkage out to gsr linkages it fixed the problem. Let me guess, when your in gear you can move it side to side real far as if you were in neutral.

no... im pretty sure im using a gsr shift linkage.. which year si were u refering to.. because before my b18c swap i had a d16z6. and im pretty sure the d16z6 shift linkage would not fit the b18c. am i correct? sorry if im wrong.

hmm how about switching to a short shifter? would that fix my problem? i was thinking about going with an edlebrock SS. anyone have any experience with this? however, i;ve hear that SS can mess up your synchros(this is wat i've read on H-T, not sure if its true.)

yeah i do have a skunk2 shift ****, but its the not the cause. i've already tried both, but it doesnt make a difference.
just broke my elelbrock shifter and had to take it out to replace it for stock. I might have an idea why there is alot of play side to side, The shift linkage is too wide for the shifter. there are two rubber washers that go in the sides. the edelbroke has metal washers to eleminate the play. the pin in the shifter slide side to side thus causing the play. I used brass brake line washers to stop the movement and it didn't bind.

no i still havent figured out the problem. im just gonna buy a new gsr shifter and shift linkage and see wat will happen. either way ill let u guys know if it works or not.
HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM
BOUGHT A USE SKUNK2 DOUBLE BEND SHORT SHIFTER WITHOUT A SPACERS BETWEEN THE SHORT SHIFTER AND THE linkage
i will buy a new short shifter with spacers
also it can be that the bolt that goes thru the shifter is worn out
i drove a teg with a dc short shifter and sits lower than skunk2
but skunk2 feels better

ill definitely look into this.
does anyone know any places in the bay that sell modified rod joints? this could be the answer to my problem.

I found the problem that might work for you guys too. The two bolts holding down the shifter assembly, directly under the shiftboot were loose, and the rubber bushing in that assembly was worn. I tightened the bolts and that made hell of a difference.
