Sloppy shifter got you in a slush?
I'm just sitting here taking a break, and the moons finally collided, and my digital camera is within arms reach at the same time as i am finishing up a little project, so i snapped some pics and a couple of movies for ya... hehe.
This is something that we are starting to do for people who desire a bit of a 'crispier' shift out of their cars... Zero-play shift linkages
Here are two video's... the first video is of the 'play' in this shifter rod, and the second video is of the 'lack-of' play in the new modified joint...
Right click/Save as:
2.08MB http://www.rpiracing.com/compo...d.mov - Stock Joint (Before anyone questions how old this joint is, the shift rod here was purchased new from HASport about a year ago, but only has about 5 months of street driving on it)
The new joint:
2.63MB http://www.rpiracing.com/compo...w.mov - RPI Modified Joint
And here are the pics for ya:
The joint we replaced:

The new RPI modified joint:

If you are interested in this modification, the price tag is not 'nice', but that is because of the cost of these zero-play joints...
. but if your shifting is important to you, then the cost may not be the top priority.

What is the cost? Any negative effects to the tranny when shifting hard (keepin in mind that it's possible to outshift the tranny with everythign stock).
We've been doing the modifications to the change rod and the compensation rod for $250 (Edit- OLD PRICE... it is now only $175!!!).. you have to send in your shift rod though... but this can be added to any car that uses a shift rod rather than cables for the shifting.
The big problem with the price, is the cost of these joints... if i start doing more of them, the cost could come down a bit as i buy the joints in higher quantities... but as it sits right now, the market is not that great for this sort of mod yet (although i feel it will get there, as the feeling it gives you when you are driving is second to none).
As for damage to the tranny, its just like anything else... shift a stock car wrong, and you will damage it... shift this wrong, and you could damage the tranny... but damage from just using it properly? I haven't seen or heard of it really. we've run joints like this on some of the race cars i've worked on in the past with no bad effects to the transmission, and i haven't heard anything but praise from the handful of honda's that we've done so far.

There are enough people interested in this, that i may buy a lot of the joints at the same time, and that would bring the cost down considerably... if you are interested in getting a shifter like this done, i may be willing to do some sort of 'groupbuy' on them for a much lower price than what i'm currently selling them for.... especially if i can get at least 10-15 people interested all at the same time
I happened to post this more out of boredom than anything, but its actually getting some really good response.
I need to know what the 'real' interest is though, so if you want one, email me to let me know how interested you are

i would be also interested in just the joint. shipping my stuff from canada and back would not be time and cost effective for just a shift joint

there are a few pages on the net that sell ones but not the right size/shape

maybe someone could make this work?
http://www.grainger.com/Graing...citem=
i dont know if you could weld to that....but its a lot cheaper than the other ones in this post. i'm assuming you can turn it since its for an impact (it wouldnt slip like a standard ball and socket would).

We're still doing the mod when people want it... nothing really 'new', other than we've changed joints though, and we lowered the price to $175. Nothing wrong with the old joint that we were using, but with the new joint, the boot doesn't come off, where-as with the one with the black boot, it can be removed (which also meant that it was more prone to being contaminated by dirt, etc).
If you'd like to have this done, just contact me via Email - ComposiMo@RPIracing.com
I don't have any pics of the new joint, we haven't had anyone do the shifter mod in a couple of weeks, and i wasn't able to get a pic at that time of their setup.

can you draw me a diagram of "how it works" or the inside of that boot so i know how it moves and what not?
I'm interested! how many for a GB?
I would want it to be about $100ish.... how many people would it take? 10-15?

There is no way we'd be able to do it for $100... if you DIY'd it you might be able to, but i've already done the research, found the parts, figured out the process of welding it without hurting anything, and i already have all the equipment needed to do the job.
If we were to do a GB with at least 10 entrants, i might be able to move the price down to $150, but thats as low as i can go on it... I have set costs built in here, and i have to cover what i'm doing of course like any other business out there. I'm not operating out of my house or anything
If you're still interested, let me know... it may be more effort than it is worth to try to take the time to organize a GB just to save $25, when you could just buy the modification outright, and enjoy it a lot earlier
Just a thought.

Yeah I totally know what you mean bro. I've talked with you before a lot about your manifolds and downpipe's
I'll IM you since it seems like I'm the only one really interested.
