just got another 94 si yesterday and i have the 3rd gear crunch and wanted to know if there was a better trannt out there then the one that came with the car?

 

the y8 is a little stronger. try some GM synchromesh before getting another tranny though.

 

as stated above the y8 is probably the best sohc tranny you can have. shorter gears than a z6 i presume? other than that, the z6 tranny is pretty damn close to a y8 tranny.

Indeed the Y8. 5th Generation people like to either swap a D16Z6 Ex/Si or D16Y8 EX transmission.

Indeed, invest in some Pennzoil Synchromesh and see if that clears it up after a few hundred miles or so. If not, swap it out with a D16Y8 transmission.

D16Y8 and D16Z6 gearing is exactly the same. D16Y8 has a steel shifter fork versus aluminum (thanks for correcting me). Transmission fluid is not a fix for a grind, all it does is make it last a while longer before having to replace the synchro.

yes, the D16Z6 and the D16Y8 transmissions are the same, except for the fact that the Z6 has aluminum shift forks, and the Y8 has steel shift forks. that's the only reason why the y8 is better.

the z6 has aluminum(weaker) shift forks, the y8 has steel. the synchromesh has cured my 3rd gear grind for around 5 months now.

are you suggesting him to get a Y7 tranny? don't get a Y7 tranny (even if it has steel shift forks), unless you're that desperate (need tranny now, gas mileage, etc...). if you need a new or different SOHC tranny, i suggest you get the Y8 or Z6.

I have the stock Y7 in my car and am going to be putting a tranny together and was wondering if the Y7 has steel shift forks as well.

 

how close are the gear ratios from a y8/z6 tranny to a gsr tranny (y80?)

 

Am I correct in saying the your EX, my SI tranny is the s20?

either the z6 or the y8 is good like stated above. I think the y8 has a different backup light sensor plug then the z6, but you can just cut and soldier your old plug on. If your looking for the gears on a sohc, i think MistaBone stated that 1st and 2nd gear off a z6/y8 and 3rd/4th off a jdm zc, and you should just get a vx/cx or dx/lx 5th to save gas.
