the other day i was wondering wether or not super gas would be better for my civic ( 99 stock dx) so i put some in, but i also had the timing belt replaced and a tune up done so i wasnt sure what was making my car run better. anyways my moms bf whos basically a mechanic said that its a waste because these types of cars were meant to run on normal gas. what do u guys think? would super be better for my car and offer better performance?

No, run what Honda recommends, which is probably 87 for your car.

the higher the octane, the more it resists pre-igniton (detonation)... lower compression engines ( read:stock) dont have this problem, but the higher compression engines do, thus the need for 91-93 octane.

 

untill your are adding forced induction, nitrous, advanced spark programming, or increasing compression ratio, you will be giving your money away to the oil companies.

you motor is well under 10:1 compression ratio

a car using the lowest octane fuel that doesnt allow detonation will yield more power than the same car using a fuel with higher octane than needed.

but i am sure you are going to do what you wanna do reguardless of what we tell you. because your head, and butt are going to be falsly telling you that you are running better on the super/premium. you believe what you want to believe.

i run super sometimes in my stock b16 del sol...any of ya'lls know what honda reccomends for any b16 civic? or is it still just regular?? i'm used to buyin 91 for my car since i used to own dsm's ..

 

Unless your vechile is pinging/knocking...use 87. Since mine has been pinging a bit on 87 octane, I had to upgrade to 89 octane. You should be able to use 87, but I've had a SMALL timing/carbon buildup issue that I need to deal with.

 

stick to 87 with gas prices being how they are right now.

 

I would use 89 octane and then you'lll be sure that thee is no knockin but you don't need super..

 

if im running a jdm ecu and jdm engine dont they run on like 100 octain in japan ?

thier octane ratings are derived from a different measurement than what the U.S. uses while thier octane numbers are higher, the fuel's actual octane quantity is lower.

what does it matter where the ECU is from. it could be from mars. if the engine does not ping/detonate from the 87, why use anything higher?

Yeah because they are 10.5:1 stock...unless you have 10:1 compression or greater then regular unleaded is fine.

 

Would regular be alright for a B18? It a damn shame the nearest gas station's cheapest gas is 87 octane for 2.05 a gallon.

 

2.05?!?!?!!?!? LUCKY!!!! mine for 87 is freakin 2.33 over here.

 

if you run a higher octane than is recomended for your car you can actually get carbon build up from it being a slower burning fuel. Unless you an upgraded ignition and running boost or high compression, and so on(which I think someone already mentioned) you don't need it.

The only way that you can get better gas mileage or more power from higher octane gas than is recommended for your car is if your car has higher than stock compression and you have advanced your timing to take advantage of it. Some cars with high compression engines also have knock sensing ignition that can allow their timing to advance to the point of pre-ignition. High compression engines in cars with these fancy ignition systems produce more power and better gas mileage if you burn premium in them. They can also burn regular because they can retard their timing so pre-ignition (pinging) doesn't occur. My stock engined 94 EX D16Z6 engine never pings on 87 so I'm assuming it doesn't have very high compression. It would be a complete waste to run premium in your car in my opinion.

True, and would back him on this

However, the difference that higher octane makes with respect to the cleanliness of your engine is HUGE - if you could control it - take two engines (identical) and run them the same way, same mileage, same oil changes etc - after 30,000 miles check the plugs, piston domes, intake mainfold, throttle body, etc..... - you will note a difference between them.

I have always run high Octane in my 93 hatch (bought it new) - always will, may cost an extra 2, 3 or maybe 4 buck a tank, but in my book, worth it, my .02...

performance is always good

but wont i have to upgrade my tranny also?

 

i have the tiny 1.5L v-tech e and it has minor mods on it but if i use regular gas it runs like **** i use 94 octane gas and i can always notice a dif when i put it in

Then something is wrong with your engine. It was DESIGNED BY HONDA ENGINEERS to run on 87-octane. Running 94 is not only masking the problem but wasting your money.
