Default Overheating problem... a bit baffled.

Ok from the beginning.

I attached my fan to my radiator using zip ties, well yesterday they broke and here is where my problem begins.

My car begins to get hot because when the fan broke, 7 of the 10 blades broke only leaving three to cool it, which was doin an ok job. It atleast kept it from over heating. However...

I then replaced the fan this afternoon, and for some reason now it overheats.

I thought it might be the theremostat. Replaced it bout 2 hours ago.... STILL overheating. I don't really understand.

I was suggested it might be the headgasket, but its not really smoking anymore than normal for my car, which is turbo, so I didin't think it was.

So any suggestions or things for me to check that might entail an answer woudl be much appreciate.

Thanks,
Jason

Make sure the electrical connections are OK and that the fan switch in the radiator is working (make sure the fan actually turns on).

Sometimes a bit of a shroud around the fan will help effeciently route air through the radiator and help in cooling.

Best of luck, Ed

Overheats on city driving, I haven't got on the highway yet.

All connections are good. The fan comes on and everything.

Air?? I guess I am a bit confused here...

And my bad on the tech forum, I just know alot of ppl in this forum are pretty knowledgeable... if a moderator believes this thread is better suited in the tech forum which it probably is please move it.

What Yoshi was refering to is essentially "bleeding" the air from the cooling system.

For the most part this simply entails warming the car up with the radiator cap off and every now and then squeezing at least the upper hose (and adding fluid to the radiator) to make sure there aren't any air bubbles left in the head.

city drivings, probly not the fan, cause enough air is already moving through the radiator at 35mph. check the radiatotr, could be clogged, or not enough flow, t stat, but if thats new then unless you put alot of silicon on it to cause it to clog then thats ok.
i would recomend bleeding too, and make sure you put the heater on hot, to bleed the system just run it with the cap off, you'll make a mess but thats ok.
after the car sits overnight do you need to add coolant to it? if so the your head gasket is done, blown head gasket does not necesary mean smoke coming out the pipe.

The fan is new, and so is the thermostat. The radiator is only a month old.

And the antifreeze was about a 50/50 mix but now theres more water due to losing some.

I dunno if I will need to fill it up in the morning, I'll check.

Anyway, the last time I drove it bout and 15 min ago it didn't overheat, so maybe it was just some air in the line, but I usually let it run a while and put more in there so I dunno. But it seems fine. Well see tomorrow afternoon when its hot again outside.

wateris what cools the motor, so by having more water will not hurt. but the lesser the colant the lesserthe protection against corotaion and freezing during cold winter.

check the fan switch, that's what my problem was...the fan switch was bad or something. So the car is always appear hotter than normal...cause the fan didn't on until certain degree...

what about the hoses? are they in good condition or do they have any bulges anywhere? This happened to my civic, replaced the radiator and thermo and still overheated. Turns out the lower rad hose was bulging and the coolant wasnt flowing through the system the way it should.

any oil in the radiator(floating at the top by the rad cap)? If not then Id probably rule out the head gasket at this point.

Radiator in good condition?

have you had the system FLUSHED?

Hows the water pump?

The fan comes on at the right time.. fan switch is fine. Like I said I believe everything is cool now, it just wasn't quite full. I guess the thermostat didn't open allowing the level to fall as I thought it had. But I also haven't driven it in the dead heat of the day.

With the engine/radiator cold open the radiator cap. Replenish c00lant if level is not to the bottom of the neck.

With the rad cap off, start the car up...let it idle till the fan comes on (that way j00 know that the t-stat opened)

Replenish c00lant if level drops, j00 may see some bubbles coming up...that's normal, it's burping the system.

Once the fan comes on and there is no more bubbles coming up put the rad cap back on.

Also make sure that the overfill bottle is half full or so with c00lant.

Hope that helps.

you say you have a turbo, do u have a frontmount? if u do that could be your problem, not enough air is getting past your intercooler to the radiator. a friend of mine had to hardwire his radiator fan to a switch inside the car so he can flip it on permanitly while he's tracking the car otherwise he would overheat whenever he got cought up behind someone

I am thinking that is what is is.. because I had the bumper off last night when it wasn't overheating and then I drove it today in the heat of the day and it was fine, but when I put the bumper back on it started over heating again. When I took it back off it went down again and never really got too hot again. But the thing is, that with my old fan on the radiator it never used to overheat with the bumper on, so maybe the new fan doesn't pull enough air?? Is that possible. Its a 12 in slim fan (from I think advanced autoparts) on a dual core del sol radiator. And I know it not a full size teg radiator, BUT it worked BEFORE...
