Default Help with code 17--VSS

The Specs:

91 hatch
95 b18c1 with ys1 tranny
"EF" si gauge cluster.
Pr3 ecu

The Low-down:

Driving it after the swap, I was not hitting vtec. About 15 minutes later I am throwing CEL and it shows code 17. Check all connections (that I am aware of) and reset the ecu. No CEL, no vtec, but after a few minutes the CEL will come back on. The confusing part about this is that the speedo is working.

Please help me out, I want this car finished.
BTW I searched and couldnt find what I was looking for.

i had a problem like this but i had a GSR cluster in my 90 crx. My speedo didn't work though, but i forgot to splice a wire from my signal ( i think ) to my ecu. I dunno if u have to do that also, but its a suggestion.

find out what pin is your VSS signal in the harness. Then find out what pin the pr3 is expecting to see a vss signal. Then, move the wire.

what do you mean move the wire?

And are you talking about the harness leading to the cluster?

I had a similar problem, ended up just swapping out the entire gauge cluster for another one. CEL went away, so I guess the speed sensor in the cluster was bad. Not too sure about the dash lights though. Maybe the dimmer switch is bad too?

My check engine light for that goes on when I go to 4500 rpm and let it coast down from there. I think it's my vss that is bad and am working on replacing it right now. The helm manual does have a procedure on how to check if it's working or not. I believe you take the vss out, break the lead off a pencil and stick it in there. Then you attach a vom to two of the screws on the back (forget which ones sorry) and measure resistance as you spin the pencil. If it gets resistance 4x per revolution the vss works.

got it figured out. vtec is so beautiful in a gutted hatch running open header. LMAO!!!

It was the sensor running from the gauges to the ecu. The ground and the vss wire were broken off.
