this is in response to some of the other forums that are bashing this engine. i have never heard so many people complain about the 2.0/2.1 prelude engine in the third gen's. i know a couple of people who have these cars, a 2.0 si with 4ws, and a 2.1 si. they haven't had problems, just the normal things like every other car. what is so bad about these engines that everyone hates them.

please tell me the answer to that. i would like to hear from some experts on this too. not someone saying, well i heard this about them. i want facts on why these engines are so horrible. anyone?

 

In my dealings with them, they are NOT that bad. People claim they are the bastard child of the Honda family... but I have not had seen problems getting decent power out of them. Ask Knightsport... he's got a third gen that's pretty trick. Granted, it isn't running, but thats not the cars fault!

 

I've got a '89 2.0 Si, 150,000 miles on it. eats oil, sounds like it's grinding around 6,000, but that itsn't it's fault. Would have been nice if it was taken care of better when i bought it, but hell, i could take better care of it. I've seen dyno plots of a guy upgrading a 3rd gen on Hondaprelude.com and they didn't seem to benefit greatly from the mods. also it's a bitch to get a vtec in there according to the mechanic i go to. http://www.ludespeed.com has a sweet VTEC converision though. I don't think it's a bad engine though, i've got a friend with a 96 civic EX and i can take her, so it's not like it's the weakest engine in the honda line up. personally i love my 3rd gen. sure if i had more money i'd like to somehow get a H22A in there, but that's another story. I'm by all means not an expert, but i love my car. engine and all.

I love the engine, only problem is they're prone to burning oil if not taken care of. The stroke ratio also has some precautions to this.

I believe it's a great engine, with good power. Many people think there isn't many mods to it, but believe me, there is. Just takes longer to find. Check out my car in the URL in my signature.

 

There is a 3rd gen w/ a JDM H22 & LSD install here. brembo brakes, BBS RC's, and all the bolt ons.... the install is CLEAN AS HELL.
