D16Y8 turbo or K20A2/A3 hatch
Here's the deal. I am seeing some rust-free EF hatches around here for about 2k. But before I buy one, I want some views on which one YOU'D build. Like which year would be best and light for a daily driver/drag car. Here are my goals. 1. QUICK: atleast Low 13's, a mid-range monster w/ decent top-end . 2. MPG: 91 octane costs $2.55 here in CA, and I drive quite a bit, so the Y8-T probably wins here. 3. RELIABILITY: I don't like to change head gaskets every 3 months. Which motor would survive longer? I'm asking you guys because you know what I heard on D-Series.Org. Both are awesome motors, but the K20 is like 5g+ and I've heard kinda hard to transplant into a 4th gen. I am kinda leaning towards the D project, but there's something about 6 gears... I have a friend who works with tuners so labor $ won't kill me. I'd like to hear both sides here, so Speak Up sheepish K people!!

If I had the money, it would be the K series without a thought! Six speed! Tons of potential! Hello! Just buy a beater and put a y8 turbo in that, it doesn't cost much at all
OK. I like the Y8 cuz if you blow it to shrapnel, it'll only set you back like 400 bucks! But anyone here have some pros for the K20? I mean, it can hit 200whp w/ bolt ons, right? I might be able to find a SI or base RSX front clip for less than 5g, but it won't have 178whp, and aftermarket K parts are the most expensive fwd honda engines to work on...
If I was in your shoes ill just get a d16y8 because, 1. easier swap 2. cheaper to replace 3. more parts are available and 4. CHEAPER Well for the year or model to look for anything 88 is good, unless if its an 89 HF. Just keep away from bulky Si models or if you want the sunroof and door mounted seat belts found in 89-91 models go for it. Good luck

Some of you know your Honda. What kinda gas mileage would a K20A2 or A3 get in a 1900 lb. car? How hard are K's to maintain? If I got almost 30 per gal on premo, I'd save and swap the 2.0L, Hondas survive NA. Would I have mid-range and any TQ with a NA K? Top speed=Never use...Love guts though.
hmmm....
$5-6k for 160-200hp for a k20
or
spend that same amount or a little less on the y8, building up the entire engine and a nice turbo kit.
with $5,000 to spend, you can *easily* pull 300hp out of a d series; there are people out there making over 200whp with a $500 junkyard turbo kit, and since its built from the bottom up, its going to be reliable.

For just the motor. Then you gotta worry about mounts, axles, wiring, custom hood etc... K series still isn't very practical in an EF; I'm not sure it will ever be.

I would say just a d16y8 with some bolt ons it would feel pretty fast but no where near what you want i guess...you would get the gas mileage you wanted though. One question have you thought about an h22a? I know you didnt list it but it could net you 13s and still get ok gas mileage

Yeah, def I thought about the whole Honda arsenal. Like B18b turbo, JDM b16 sir, B18c5, H22... But I narrowed it down to the K and D because they are light enuf to not F'up the weight balance and can pull off decent mileage too if built right. I am pretty settled on the Y8 now, thanks for the knowledge.
correct me if im wrong here but you can't have a turbo on a car in cali unless it carb legal an nitrous is illegal too, so what are your plans around inspection time?
Well, that's a good point. In my county, you only have to get it smogged every 2 years, so I'd do a custom turbo setup and give the inspector a $100 thank you. I know I can pass the sniffer, but unless you get a Greddy carb legal kit, it can't legally pass the visual test. Maybe the Greddy is a good kit after all.
