Default should the plug that goes to the a/c compressor be "hot"?

i'm not 100% sure my compressor is bad, and was trying to check it out, but the plug that comes from the compressor, a single prong, should the one that attaches to it be "hot" when the a/c is on?

i checked the 2 relays (one for the a/c fan and one for something else) and they're both good.....a/c fan kicks on, but i can't get anything out of the compressor and i'm not showing the wire that plugs into it to be "hot".......can anyone check it or does anyone know?

and i HAVE to fix the a/c, it hits 100 here all summer and i have a 3 year old, so it has to be figured out somehow.......

I got the same problem. Fixed it by disconnect the single plug and jumper from the AC relay fan to the plug's end that goes to the compressor. Now when the AC fan is ON, the compressor is ON too. I have to add 1 can of freon to the system. It works great! Just remember to shut off the AC sometimes to prevent overheat!!
Hope this help...

Yes, the wire going to the compressor should have 12 volts. On some models the engine has to be running for the ECU to energize it.

my dad told me something i didn't think of.....the low pressure switch is there to KILL power to the compressor when coolant isn't there or not enough.......gonna try jumping this to verify the compressor's shape and then figure out what the issue is from there

coolant? it is freon

Yes, you pressure switch cycles the compression on and off. If there is not enough pressure (low on freon, stuck line) it will not turn the compressor on. Bypass the switch and see if the compressor starts cycling. If it does not start, your relay may be bad and/or another electical part.

lol.......don't worry....it was a typo...haven't tried to put a whole lot of coolant in there lol..........but when i ASSUMED the compressor was bad, i had just tried to recharge it, and the compressor was acting as if it were trying to work intermittently.......i usually don't fool with a/c at all and know very little, but i'm gonna get it all back together and see if it does indeed try to kick on...if it does, i'm gonna get it all ready to be charged up, throw some "coolant" in there, and see what it does......this pump, since it's an r12 originally won't have a problem with r134a freon will it.....if all the other necessary parts are swapped out?

ok...figured this bitch out.....the problem was that it was too full i suppose......pump was fine, and the low pressure switch is also a high pressure switch i suppose....... i never used gauges before because a full system would always stop taking in the freon when it was full.....not this civic system though......learned something new of course, but it took me 3 weeks lol

i've got some nice cold air though, so it's all good

please tell me you didn't dump 134A into that old R12 system to try to "top it off". If you did you're in trouble.
