Default Distributor oil leak

How is the distributor sealed from the engine on the 93 1.6L EX coupe. My engine has had an oil leak for some time, and despite replacing the valve cover gasket, it still leakes. It looks to be comming from the distributor end of the engine. That makes sense because I've had a problem on two occasions where one position inside the distributor cap was fouled causing the engine to run rough (on three cycliders). Does the distributor shaft have a seal internal to the housing, and could that be replaced (reuild kit?) without having to buy a new distributor? Could it be possible that the leak is not internal to the distributor, but external and that oil just got under the distributor cap from the outside? What am I getting myself into? I have some experience with cars but am not a mechanic by trade.
