Default Air Conditioning problems (Car RPMS go down, makes funny noises..)

When I turn my air conditioning on, the car makes a kind of funny noise like a creaking almost and the RPM's go down to almost 0 every 2 seconds or so. Any ideas? Compressor? A pulley? How hard would it be to pick up a Helms and try to troubleshoot?

the rpms are almost expected to drop if your are sitting still, cause the engine has to work to turn another belt/accesory. Not sure about your noise though.

With that book the troubleshooting should be easy. It's very detailed.

Let me guess...
The IACV is supposed to compensate for the AC compressor so the idle holds steady. Mine works just fine at idle. But if the compressor has MUCH more drag than it's supposed to, it'll drag down the idle.

Your compressor should take a couple minutes to cycle. Every 2 seconds is WAY too often for the compressor to clutch in. That might be your system is overcharged with refrigerant, or the expansion valve is plugged.

Now there are no more noises but a horrible almost burning smell. the rpm's instantly go down. Any ideas?

Rubens, the burning smell could be your A/C clutch slipping. If the compressor is causing abnormal drag on the pulley, that could cause the rpm drop and the clutch slippage.

My car's idle usually increases to 1000 RPM, it also does this when the lights are on. On occasion it will stay around 700 and run rough with some squeaky noise.
