Default key lock hood pins vs regular hood pins ---> pictures anyone?

Alright, i was looking to see if anyone had a pic of the key lock hood pins and also a pic of the regular locking hood pins? Which work better/ are more reliable for high speeds? Is it possible for the regular hood lock pins to fall out? I already did a search, and could find nothing. Thank you.

There's really not much to see, one just keeps your hood from flying open, but the other keeps the hood locked and secure from theft only and will not keep the hood from flying open (EDITED: because people have had hoods fly off with locking pins). I've only used the regular pins (as seen in the first pic) to keep my hood from flying off. It was used on my RX-7 which are pretty hard to break into, so I didn't need the locking pins.

You can get them from http://www.summitracing.com

most locking hood pins are not designed to hold the hood down. I have heard of them breaking and slipping off.

I can vouch for that too. Koala Yummies had them on his old car and had quite a few problems with them.

Also, Mr. Gasket's instructions say they are purely for security, not for safety.

If you want to keep the hood from flying off and locked then do two regular pins and 2 locking pins. But if somebody wants to get under your hood bad enough they'll find a way past the locking hoodpins. If you have a bad latching system or a CF hood, then at least get the regular pins.

Here's what I did when I installed my hoodpins. I had to do it with my stock FD hood and again with my CF hood, so you can do it either way.

method #1
Install the hood pins and wrap the top of the pin with paper towel and use some rubber bands to secure it and then get some liquid white out and paint the top of the towel covered hood pin and quickly close the hood on the pins so that the white out leaves a mark on the underside of the hood.

method #2
Get some scotch tape and fold it into a tube and stick it to the installed pin. Close the hood onto the pin so that the tape sticks to the underside of the hood.

In both methods you will have marked the underside where you will start drilling through the bottom. Just take a dremel and drill a hole in the center of your mark. When you close the hood and look down through the top you will see the hood pin through the hole you just drilled. Now just use the dremel bit to enlarge the hole. Just stick it through the hole from underneath and move it to the front, back and side of the hood to enlarge the hole. Keep closing the hood and looking through the hole from the top to see which way you need to enlarge the hole.

If you are drilling through a aluminum hood make sure you use compressed air to blow away the metal shavings. Dont wipe the metal shavings away, now matter how small the shavings or flakes are, the paint will scratch. If you are drilling through CF, then just use a damp towel to wipe off the CF dust and dry it off.

Give me a minute or two and I will show you why you really done need to be precise with the hood holes.

Here is the pic of my old hood with the holes that I drilled. The hole is only about 1/4 of an inch by a little less then 1/4 of an inch. The circular part of the mounting plate measures an inch and a half in diameter. So there is at least another 3/8 of an inch of space on each side of the hole. If you make the hole a little larger then the size of the pin it will still be covered by the mounting plate.

EDIT: I cut-and-pasted an image of the mounting plate that is pretty close to scale. You can see that even if you make the pin hole a little too large it will be covered by the plate.

So is there a way to get the best of both worlds? I'd like security and safety in one package....

i have bought the locking hood pins awhile back to use on my FG hood. i had to buy 2 sets. cuz i can't mount my hinges to it!! but now this is not makeing me feel to confident in these hood pins !!
but then again i'll have 4 locking hood pins on my hood. and in order for the hood to fly up and what not. all 4 hood pins would have to break!!

i'm looking at the hood pins right now. and they do look like there cheesy metal!!

hmmm... what to do now

well i guess the only thing TO DO is to get 4 hood pins. How should i set them up so they dont look ghetto as hell, just do one on top of the other, or should i space them out? Also, where do you drill the holes for the hood pins/ where would be the best location? THANKS!

If you look under your hood there should be 4 rubber or plastis bump stops that the hood rests on. When you install hood pins you can take of these bump stops and use the holes. If you use the bump stop holes then the pins will be symetrical, so no need to worry about lining them up.

you can also put a dab of grease on the top of the pins instead of white out.

NP, just remember the important things:

-when you are enlarging the hole, insert the drill through the bottom of the hood and not the top. If you lose control of the drill and it comes out of the hole you might accidently scratch the paint. And it's better to accidently do that through the bottom then the top. You dont want to scratch the pain on the top where everyone can see it.

-if you are drilling through an aluminum hood use compressed air to blow away the shavings and aluminum dust, no matter how small or big the metal specs/shavings are.

Good Luck

You mean the regular pins like the ones I had? all the brand names are made the same. I've used both the expensive ones like Sparco and the el-cheapo Pep Boys ones, and they both looked the same. Maybe you can try the colored ones and hope that teh paint coating will help prevent rust? or maybe you can buy some rustoleum and give the hood pins a coat to help protect it.

Is there a way to have both styles without looking too "busy" or redundant??
