Default Ignition Timing and Cam Gear Timing

When you advance the intake cam doesnt this also advance the ignition timing as well? People are saying that once you advance that, you also have to retard your igntion timing as well... my question is this... Wouldnt the ECU automatically retard the ignition timing back to factory specs? When would you even need to change the ign. timing? (for all motor). If i just throw in some CTR cams and use the settings of +3*/-1 would it be safe to run 18*. I guess what im wanting to know is do you still only run 14-18* for pretty much any kind of ALL MOTOR car? Im guessing that only with boost you run outside of factory specs. I.E. 20-26*

Can timing be changed either by Hondata or by the distributor? Or are these two toally different timings?

I just wanted to add another question. Why does it say to retard the ignition timing as boost increases but people are increasing to like 22-26*? If these are two totally different timings then please explain.

The way a sequential fuel injection system works is by having a cam sensor position input. This gives the ecu a reference as to where the intake cam is opening the valves, and when to inject the fuel.

If you advanced the intake cam, you are advancing the point at which the cam signal is being read, therefore advancing the timing. In order to fix the cam being advanced, you have to change the base timing in the EMS program and then retard the timing through the EMS system. You can also just simply dial in the distributor with a timing light after changing the intake cam setting.

The typically timing value at atmospheric operating condition (i.e WOT, no boost) is 30-32 degrees total advance. You retard from that point. So 22-26 degrees would be retarding the ignition from the 30-32 degrees at atmospheric.

Damn, are you writing a book about timing or something? How many posts or bumping of old threads do you need?
