Default How do you know if your motor is in good condition?

What kind of tests can I do to verify my motor is healthy to be modified? What should I be looking for?

Thanks!

Compression test and leak down test...

The compression in each cylinder should be within I believe 6% of each other.

Yeah I get about 270-280 miles when the gas light comes on... probably about 24mpg.

Worst case scenario my compression tests does not come out the way I want them to. What is the next option?

just start by doing a compression test. if u get good numbers than chances are there is nothing wrong and ur motor is healthy.

forget about dyno-ing it right now; if you want to know the health of your motor; do what the above mention posts suggest; Compression test & Leakdown test; This will identify if you have any problems or not. Also inspect around the valvecover and head gasket area to see if you have any oil seapage.. also check around your oilpan to see if you have any leaks.

If you want to get a good base line of your motor; you prob want to check if you need to replace: cap/rotor, spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter. aka.. basic maintance.

good luck; but by gauging from the miles on your car.. your motor is probably a cherry.
