distributor seized, timing belt jumped, freaking out...
Last week my distributor froze up. Here's a fun picture of the fried bushing I took out of it:

I installed my new one today and it wouldn't start. I guess I was in denial about the potential consequences of a seized dizzy, so I hadn't bothered to check anything. I took off my starter and checked out all the teeth, and everything looked in order. Then I took off the valve cover and timing belt cover:

I'm guessing the two "UP" arrows shouldn't be 90 degrees off like that. So... I'm kind freaking out right now... did I bend valves? I've never had to crack open an engine before. Would somebody mind walking me through exactly what I should do now? I'ma go drink some beer...

I did a swap for a friend and were getting no spark, so we switched dizzys and the same thing happened. His froze on my motor (lucky bastard he is) and the cams jumped almost identical to yours. Even being an interference motor, I had no collision problems. I would hope you are in the same boat. Just take off your timing belt and redo your timing. Make sure that you are at TDC, then match the cams, put it all back together. Don't get worked up, I think you'll be ok.
you might have bent valves depending on how hard you were revving it. if so just replace the valves or the head. reset timing top and bottom, put in new distributor and try to start it. if it starts and runs fine you've done no damage. if you hve to give it alot of gas to keep it running then you're losing compression and have bent some or all of the valves
reset the timing. fix/replace your distro first.

id say take your intake cam out so it will be easier to line up....less chance of it hitting piston. when crank and exhaust are at TDC then drop intake cam back in and torque to spec. Do a compression check once everything is lined up.
I had mine set like that when I got my engine, I should have checked it before hand stupidly. I pulled off the head thinking I bent them, but they were fine, so you probably are ok.

lol... :raises hand:
ive done this, timming jumped.. and i was soon shoping for new valves.
was that a jap distributor, or was it a back east?

Thanks PhatOptimo, the b16 shop man is exactly what I needed. I reset everything to how it should be and fired it up. Now it rattles like a ****. Can I assume that's a bent valve whacking into the cylinder head?
Built b16a - the distributor that seized came from japan with my engine. I'm guessing mine didn't fall into the "30-40 thousand mile average."

heh, I didn't want to admit it but... how do I go about doing that?
edit: nevermind, used search. gonna go track down a tester.

then.. that nice and wet boat ride.. like i said.. i raised my hand.. lol
and the engine #'s look ok.. but the 1st thing i though, valves.. happened to me too many times. lol.. good luck.
