k so i think i've narrowed it down to my piston rings being worn.... compression is great, 265 on all 4 (jdm itr internals), leakdown showed less than 10% leakage in all cylinders, blue smoke and lots of oil burning in high revs (1-2 quarts of oil/week).. piston rings, correct?

wondering if there's any other good how-to articles out there or people willing to help me replace my piston rings... other than a shop to hone (or is there a good way of doing this myself without the 3 stone thing? i want the hone done right with the 60º crosshatches), ring compressor and/or expander, torque wrench, and the usual socket set? i also can get a hold of a cherry picker and any other tools needed to remove the engine if needed..

input would be greatly appreciated as i would like to get this project done as soon as possible to finally put in hondata and tune and see what this baby's got to offer

aaahh, 265 compression all around! you should have NO problems with your rings. If you are letting out blue smoke you are running too rich. If it was bad rings your leakdown test would have been worse and shown it to you. I say you're lucky and only have to check your A/F mixture.

 

1-2 quarts of oil a week ain't just runnin' rich.. ive heard that even though the rings are worn that it may not show up in compression test results...

 

OK, I see. My buddy was losing a bunch of oil like that too but it was coming from his oil pan gasket. I was trying to save you a bunch of work if possible. I've been doing tons of work with my buddy like pulling motors and building motors and it's quite a bit of work. We didn't have a cherry picker so we ended up doing a motor swap with a 2 by 4 and some chains... Let me tell you - NOT FUN but I think we are going to mount this 2 by 4 on the wall or something. I'm amazed it held up.

Well, If you DO replace the rings - you need for sure

Cherry Picker - makes it much easier
Ring Compressor
rachets and sockets - (cheater bar maybe)
Honda crankshaft turning tool

You may want to check the bearings and journals for wear while your at it.
BIG HINT : make sure to keep the correct order of pistons, rods after removing them. They'll have tiny little numbers on them that you should be able to see after wiping off all the oil. They won't go back in nicely if out of the proper order.

couple questions... which crankshaft turning tool should i use? i see ducati has one and it says it's for bikes and hondas.. reputable?

also, what exactly are the crank journals? ive tried searching but i can't find any pictures of these, do they look the same as the bearings?

the crank journals are the actual parts of the crank that the bearing/cap touches.
