Default Receiving a set of free ITR cams...is changing pistons a "simple swap"?

GSR engine has 100k on it with a Skunk2 manifold and full exhaust. I'm also going to install an ITR valvetrain at the same time with a set of SRR cam gears.

In addition, is it possible to add a set of higher compression pistons at the same time without removing the engine from the car(simply dropping the crank...swapping pistons and sticking it all back together)? I ask about this route as its my only ride, need to have it done over a weekend.

Almost seems too easy...but is it?

You can pull the head, drop the oil pan, and install the pistons from the top. This is fastest way to do it, but its not preferred. After that, put the head back on, and install the valvetrain + cams. You're done! Made it sound much easier than it is

Nevermind, found my answer about the pistons.

Is there anything special that I should do while I have the head off?

*Edit - Thanks Ti3d

have the head milled for some extra compression.

That's what the high compression pistons are for...or is there an advantage of milling the head as well? Besides, this needs to be started and completed in a weekend...I've rebuilt one engine before, a 5.0L engine about 12 months ago, so that's my expirience.

Undecided on pistons, but I'd like to have between 11.5 and 12.5, whatever will yield the greater gain with the ITR/CTR cams. JDM Pistons & thinner headgasket, or CTR pistons? Aftermarket?

You might as well get aftermarket pistons beacause they're lighter and stronger, but if you're on a strict budget then get the CTR or ITR pistons.

Is there a generally prefered aftermarket piston to go with...on a tight budget?

hone the cylinders when switching pistons, or else you risk burning oil and not having the rings seat.

Eh, sounds like I may just want to stick with a cam swap and possibly a 1-layer headgasket instead of tearing down the bottom end for now...
