Please Assist with a Father/Son Project
Hello, everyone. I first off would like to explain that, although I am new to your board, I intend to use this site with the utmost respect to the other members, and in no way intend to post-***** or cause problems. I will glady treat everyone with respect as long as I am not flammed for any unreasonable cause. If I over step my bounds as a newbie, and foul up, I will happily accept your rebuttals and flamming.
In addition, following the reading of your helpful "search feature guide", I hope I have not made an error in using it. My intentions of this thread are to get advice for some basic modifications for my father's stock condition 2002 Honda S2000. I used the search feature, under the topics "basic modifications" and "basic upgrades" in the S2000 section. My search came back with no results. I apologize if I have used the feature incorrectly. With that said, I will continue...
My father and I, in search of common ground, wish to modify his S2000. I am deeply infatuated with automotive customizing, but my forte is in the world of four wheel drive vehicles and off-highway driving experiences. In other words, I am quite naive from the aspect of import cars. I have, in recent months however, taken an interest in them. I have bought the latest two issues of Import Tuner, as it appears to have the most thorough production in my opinion. We've shared the mags together, and it is his wish to start a hobby together involving his car. So, that's where you folks come in.
He has started the bidding at $5,000, but I think once he starts modifying the car, it will be hard for him to stop. But with that in mind, what are some basic modifications we can choose for the car? The mods will have to be limited to the aesthetic area as of right now, seeing as how he chooses not to mess with the engine or drive train (the 100,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty pleases him). Perhaps later I can change his mind. All the modifications will be done by a certified shop, because I have no skills with body work.
I know he wishes to start off with a set of new aftermarket wheels. I would have started a seperate thread for this subject, but did no want to clutter your site with another topic that could be covered in here, seeing as how this is a multi-part question. He has his mind set on a set of 17" chrome wheels and tires. I am unfamiliar with the major aftermarket import brands
. Can you please recommend a quality brand of wheels and tires?
I thank everyone that reads this, and offers some help. I apologize again, because I am sure I have made a newbie mistake somewhere along the lines of this post. I regret having to do this, but am anxious to begin this project with my dad, as sometimes we have little to identify with among each other. Thanks again

Hands down, that is the best first post I have ever seen.
Anyways, if you're looking into a set of aftermarket wheels, honda-tech has a classifieds forum, and if you look on the main page, click where it says "sponsor list" it will have a large list of internet shops that sell car parts. The lug pattern on the s2000 is 5x114.3 so now you have a general idea what you're looking for.
As far as your fathers choice, I myself would stray from chrome wheels on an s2000, it doesnt compliment it too well. But instead of making a choice for you, im going to look for picture threads with s2000's so you can get an idea.
BTW, what color is your dads s2k?

Great post, I find my self more eager to help someone out that wants to learn, rather than someone taking up space and wasting time. Volk makes very nice sporty rims for the s2000. Check out there line of rims they can be purchased from multiple retailers such as machiii.net ipsracing.com randdmotorsports.com. As far as exterior mods, most of us have different taste but the s2000 factory option hard top and front lip are very nice mods. Upgraded suspension will also be nice, trying looking into tein. They make quality suspension that will increase performance and looks. Good luck with all decisions and feel free to p.m me to ask any other questions.
Thank you both for the fast reply. The bolt pattern is especially helpful. The car is a silver paint (I apologize, but I do not know the factory name for the paint) with a black convertible soft top. I will make the suggestions to him about trying to stay away from chrome. Also, thanks for the url addresses as well.
I have a buddy who drives an Acura TL, and he just recommended some OZ or BBS wheels. Do these companies have a reputable line of wheels? Although I consider him a conservative driver, he doesn't want to change the level of performance of the car, so I'd like the wheels to be properly constructed for him.
Thanks again for all you who've replied and please keep them comming

When choosing rims for the S2000, please oh please get the right offsets for it. The rims on the S2000 needs a really high offset to fit perfectly. The factory specs are +55 front and +65 rear or something real close, try to find rims that are close to those offsets. Also if you want authentic stuff from japan then I suggest you try looking at http://www.bulletproofautomotive.com
your best bet is to find the right wheel with the right bolt pattern, and talk to the people on the phone about your car and what you want. they should help you the most. but here are some brands i would personally recomend:
RAYS engineering(VOLK)
Mugen
SSR (speed star racing)

Like mentioned above, Speed Star Racing (SSR) make forged wheels which are stronger and lighter than conventional cast ones. However they cost more, but I think the S2000 deserves the best. here are some wheels I planned to put on my future S2000, however, with school in full swing, I don't think I'll be able to buy the car after all. So shameless plug
:
SSR Integrals, forged, 16x7 5x114.3, 15lb +45 offset (very strong and light)

Many people run lower offsets than stock to put the wheels out further than stock this would give the car a wider stance. Plus you can choose different width tires to mount on the front vs. rear.
asking $725 btw.

I thought the same before I bought the wheels, but after asking around, people told me to just run different tires front vs. rear to retain the staggered setup.

A staggered wheel set-up, too? I know the tires are slightly staggered, but the car came with 16" diameter wheels front and back. The tires were slightly different (205/55/R16 front & 225/50/R16 rear).

Like I said, you can easily mount bigger size tires in the back than the front, because a range of tire sizes fit any given rim width.

True front and back are 16", but the fronts are 16x6.5 +55offset and the rear are 16x7.5 +65offset.

what you are saying works for the average joe shmoe that doesn't drive their car near the limits but when at the limit, you'll want your tire size matched with the ideal wheel width for that tire.
