Default Rear fender rubber trim...good or bad?

I read a thread in ITR about removing the rubber that goes along inside of the rear wheel well. Alot of people I talk to about it say that after time, this rubber strip will hold water, dirt, mud, etc. and cause your vehicle to rust. I also have a rubber strip following the outside of the fenders as well. After reading the ITR thread, many removed this strip, or atleast took it off and cleaned their wheel wells out. Will these strips really cause your vehicles to prematurely rust??

Thanks for bearing with me, this is a bit hard to explain without pictures.

well, actualy i live in new england, and took out all my weather guards, but while i did that i also took out every bolt/suspension arm/rod/form/bushing, and had them painted with a rust proof coating, bling silver and black. Without a treating on your hardware.. i would just leave them alone and worry about your camshaft or something more important

You don't have to remove it...

I take it off 1-3 times a year while I'm washing my car and make sure it's all clean back there... then I wax the area (inside & behind the fender well) to ensure it stays protected from dirt.

That or just take it off all together... if your tires ever rub or get close to rubbing I wouldn't remove it though... nothing catistrophic but it WILL put guoges in the tire and possibly pop it depending on how hard/fast it hits.

Frankly I don't think taking it off is a good solution to rust etc...

With the metal there exposed I'm sure it'd get chipped away by crap flying off the tire after not too long at all...

I really recomend keeping it but cleaning/waxing underneith it periodically.

I had them on my ek, I took them off and their was already rust formed, but I am in the process of sanding the rust metal down to the rear 1/4

I toke mine off. Its a good idea to take it off because it traps water and helps form rust.

i would say definetly take it off, it caused rust to form on two of my cars. Now i just remove it, tape off the quarter and spray SEM Chipquard on it. Its clear so cant really notice it
