Default Need help locking the axle back into the intermediate shaft

Help! I cannot for the life of me get the driver's side axle shaft back into the intermediate shaft. It goes in half way, but won't "click" into place. I tried and tried, 2 different shafts in fact, and none of them work. I can't even seem to get the old shaft back in. I have it all bolted back together and on the ground, but the shaft isn't locked into the intermediate and moves around. What do I need to do? Wrestle with it some more? I tried for an hour a few times. I've been doing it with the intermediate shaft still on the car. Should I try removing it and putting it together? Will I need to drain the trans again if I pop the driver's side intermediate shaft out?

Could the retaining ring on the end of the shaft be bad? It looks fine, not bent that I can tell.

Thanks! I don't want to have to take this to a shop!
