oh you mean the snowmobiles with wheels? yeah........not a fan.
FS might be Formula SCCA, a class that's only a couple years old.
don't forget FCC - Club Formula Continental

Yup.
FV and F500 (Formula Vee and Formula 500) have their own class. They do not have wings, so do not have the same cornering speed as the "wings'n things".
What is a Formula 4? I've heard of F440, which became F500 when they allowed a newer engine. F440 and F500 are the snowmobile cars. Although they sound annoying, they actually offer great speed for dollars spent buying one.

Makes sense now. I've been going to SCCA races for 10 years, this is the first year they've referred to them with that goofy *** name. Thanks guys.

Really? I've always heard the non-FV/F500 classes referred to as "wings n' things" by the F&C workers. If you don't like that one, you should hear what they call some of the IT classes.

picture a slighty oversized go-kart with bodywork, open wheel, open cockpit, with no wings.
EDIT: ah hell, i can find a pic easy enough

Its the informal way roadrace guys split the formula car groups.
Wings N things gets the winged formula cars, and sports racers.."non winged" gets the Formula Vs, Formula 500s, and Formula Ford/Club Ford.
When i was in my Formula Ford i used to like this (didn't have to watch my mirrors so much for the winged Formula Mazdas/Formula Continentals) Now that I am playing with the Formula Continental...I dont care..funny how that works.

Other than single seat/open cockpit and open wheeled, they are very different.
Other than single seat/open cockpit and open wheeled, they are very different.
SCCA Formula Car Classes (Road racing)
Formula Atlantic (FA): Toyota or other powered (sometimes rotary) New cars are composite chassis. (Think CART/Toyota Atlantic.) Old Super V cars run "FA" Now the Formula SCCA cars, and the Zetec Pro Series cars also run in FA.
Formula Continental (FC): Tube frame, 2 liter pinto engine Formula cars. With Wings. The Pro Series ran these up till a couple years ago.
Club Formula Continental (CFC, or CC): Same as above but for cars 1990 and older, in some region non pushrod cars. (the pro series raised tech/competition levels and this gives a place for the old cars to be competitive)
Formula Mazda (FM): Tube frame, Mazda Rotary engine, spec class.
(All of the above would run in B-Modified in Solo II)
Formula Ford (FF): Tube frame, Ford Pinto/Cortina 1600cc, No wings.
Club Formula Ford (CFF, CF): Same as above but "outboard suspension" cars. The split is usually at 1981/82.
(The Above cars run in C-Modified in Solo II)
Formula Vee (FV): Tube frame...skinny skinny tires, VW 1600 engine, No wings. The slowest of the Formula Car classes, but at Roebling Road in Savannah the track record for one of these still outruns a Ferrari Enzo by 2.5 seconds, and thats a HP course.
Formula 500 (F5): Formerly Formula 440, these are tube frame cars, powered by 500cc snowmobile engines. They are belt driven, with clutches much like a kart. Suspension comes in the form of rubber dampers (no springs or shocks) These things are pretty small, noisy and fast. They outrun the FVs by another 4-5 seconds a lap at Roebling. (a F500 is the car pictured above)
(The cars above run in F-Modified in Solo II. Formula Vs are allowed diferent ruls that allow wide tires for Solo II, which is why they will be refered to as a "Solo V" often.)
In SCCA you also have FSCCA, Pro Mazda, and some other stuff without an official class in regional or national racing. Regions will put these cars in "FS" Or Formula Super.
Formula SAE (FSAE) is the college thing. Pretty cool actually, they scratch build the cars (where all of the above have to be produced by a racing manufacturer, or be approved by SCCA) The FSAE cars have diffusers, some pretty serious wings..etc. They also dont meet SCCA requirements for wheelbase in Roadracing. But they do run in either A-Mod in Solo II, or last year they had the exhibition FSAE class at nationals.
Sports Racers are very close to Formula Cars, most have the same chassis. They just have bodywork covering all the wheels. (Think LMP body style) In Some cases they are almost as fast as Formula cars, and in one case (C-Sports Racer) they are faster because people have been taking newer Formula Atlantics and building them beyond the FA rules. Sports Racers have been running in B-Modified in Solo II as well.

heh... id *much* rather be driving our 'class project' around a race track (or even better- karting track) than a production based car. especially with the restrictor taken off, a nice turbo, and full aero
edit- fsae has its own official class now, although our index is a measely .96. you can thank the aero freaks at UTA for that
