my brake rotors cracked, why?
my stock brake rotors on my si cracked. I got endless na-y pads but those were probably only on there for a few thousand miles. Is that what might have caused this to happen? the car only has 29k on it and i've never heard of stock rotors cracking before.
How agressive are you on the brakes? Heat cycles are what fatigue brake rotors...going hot to cold, hot to cold is much harder on them then say keeping them really hot for 2 hours and cooling them down slowly. Where did the crack occur on the rotor? And how many miles were on the rotors before you switched to new pads (the new pads may have been hitting different areas of the rotor than the stock pads that the rotors were broken in on, just a thought.)
I'm pretty aggressive on the brakes. There are alot of small cracks going vertical on the rotor. I think I may have 5k miles on the pads and they look to be about half gone, not sure exactly how much is left but thats just from looking at them from outside my wheel.
I have about 10 auto-x events on the rotors, I'd say 3 of those with my endless pads. No actual track time though. 3 trips to deals gap and one to the blueridge parkway with heavy braking at both places.
I'm still not sure what caused it and need to find some new rotors quick.

When you say crack, do you mean it cracked ALL the way through? Or are you just talking about surface cracks. Surface cracks are normal if you track the car. It's when it cracks all the way through that you are screwed.

Its surface cracks but it shouldnt be happening should it if i dont track the car. i do drive hard but nowhere near what i would on a track. But you're saying i shouldnt worry that much if they are not cracked all the way thru?

Ryan - are you parking the car outside at UGA? It's been awfully cold the last few weeks. Maybe you heated up the brakes too hot and it cools too quickly. If you do decide to buy new rotors, you can get Brembo OE replacement for cheap.
Go with OEM Brembo replacements - much better than stock rotors. They come heat treated.
Cryo treated rotors are the best. There is also some sub-harmonic vibrational treatment thingamabob you can get done too - but $$$.

i do park outside but i dont really heat up the brakes around here that much. I will probably get the brembo oem replacements. How long can you typically drive if they are just surface cracks and not cracked all the way thru.
