Default EGR Valve Cleaning

Is this a job for a qualified professional? Or can an average wrench turner do it? I've read that you have to take off the fuel rail AND the intake manifold. I see no other way to get the 2 nuts off to remove the EGR valve. I also read about a TSB 98-081 which is a emmisions warranty extension. My mom's 96 Accord EX VTEC 4CY has a check engine light on because of the EGR valve AutoZone says. It runs just fine though. What do I do? Thanks!

to remove the egr valve, yes you do need to move the fuel rail over, but it doesnt mean you have to literally remove it....

just remove the 3 screws holding the fuel rail down, unhook the plastic thing off the fuel rail (black, on top )and pull it towards the drivers side and it should give you enough clearance... and while you are there, you should consider cleaning the egr ports along with it... they are probably filled with deposits, also clean the runners on the plate....

if all fails, plug it up! search around for a how to on plugging it...

So I dont need to remove the intake manifold?

So I dont actually remove the injectors from the manifold?

I dont want to block it off, since it's my moms car. maybe if it was mine.

nope you dont have to remove the intake manifold...

well the injectors will be plugged into the fuel rail still.... it comes out the second those 3 bolts holding the rail down are removed..

oh yea, remove the rubber hose that goes into the egr valve connected on the fuel rail to be able to flip the rail to the side...

why the are you moving the fuel rail?, all you need is a ratchet extension with a 12mm

Check with your local Honda dealer regarding any EGR codes DTC p0141. Some of those 3.0 are still covered under an extended emissions warrany.

I tried getting it out without removing anything. I tried an extension, u-joint, different ratchets, but the way the EGR is shaped with a little lip going around it, there is no way to get the nuts off without taking something else off.

And it's a 4cy not the 3.0.

I read on here that you should remove the valve cover to clean the EGR ports.

trust me dude, theres no need to remove the valve cover... the erg port is located Under the fuel rail, behind that metal plate... and you would need to slightly move the fuel rail to remove the erg valve, if you dont have assorted rachets or wrenches around...

How many miles does the car have om it? Because if it's under 150K it may fall under the Honda emissions warranty extension. It's worth checking into.

I just saw this. I'm new to the board in 2008, but I have some FYI for anyone with this same problem. I used a 12 mm crowfoot on an extension on the hex nut closest to the fuel rail/valve cover and I did not have to do loosen or remove anything else. The other two hex nuts holding the egr valve down were easier to get to.

I cleaned my egr valve inside. It was all carboned up. Can't say if it really needed it or not. I did it as a general maintenance. I used a new gasket, cause mine was torn up.
