Default valve adjustment question

i did a search and i've come to the conclusion the ticking sound coming from my engine is the valves. So i guess i need a valve adjustment. I was just wondering do valves that are not adjusted effect performance and is it hard on any engine components to drive the car like this? just wondering cause it will prolly be a month before it gets taken care of.

believe it or not the ticking sound is a common problem with integras...it will not effect the performance, and also valve adjustment won't fix the problem...im still looking on what will fix it

I did a valve adjustment and it fixed my problem. Your car would missfire if it was real bad, though. Just get some feeler gauages and check. i can give you the specs your supposed to have, but actually you should just buy a haynes

I dunno if the valve adjustment will change that ticking sound. i did my valve adjustment becasue my car was having a weird idle. The VA fixed that prob, but its still ticking. Yes it will effect performance, but i dont think very noticeably. My car had 140K on it and no one b4 me did a VA and myn were very close to the stock spec still. ( I think its between .008 and .006, on the non-vtec but i could be completely wrong so dont hold me to it) But it was so easy to do, screw driver and a wrench, and dont forget to get a new valve cover gasket.

My car has been ticking as well lately, but I can't hear it anymore when I get past 2 grand.... so I think it's the valves. If the ticking increases with the throttle, then I would give the adjustment a try. I'm still trying to find free time to do mine...

Valve lash that is not within service specs can cause excessive wear to your valvetrain.

My car still ticks after my valve adjustment. I checked, double checked, turned the crank through a whole cycle while checking to make sure I did the clearances right. I'm not saying you'll experience the same thing, but it may not remedy the ticking. Either way, it couldn't hurt to do one. If you do it yourself, you can pick up this handy tool from Sears call the "Gear Ratchet," it lets you stick a screwdriver through the center of the socket so you don't mess up your clearances while tighening the locking nuts.

Fuel injectors also make a clicking noise and are obviously very close to the valves so it can be hard to tell the difference. Suggest you check your valve clearances ASAP. If they are within spec. then the noise you are hearing is likely the injectors or something else.
Are you having performance or fuel economy issues?
If it aint broke, dont fix it !
Good luck and let us know how it turns out !

Any auto parts stores will have feeler guages.

Look at the sticker on the underside of your hood for valve lash specs.

Ticking can be caused by loose valve lash, or lost motion assemblies, or fuel injectors.

Default Valve Adjustment.

When my car had about 40000 miles on the odometer, I noticed the infamous ticking noise also. The noise becomes really apparent right after I would do oil changes, and becomes less apparent as the oil became more used/more miles. Although, my fuel mileage and engine perfomance did not change.

So after freaking out, and fearing that my valves needed to be adjusted badly, I took my car to the local Acura dealership (since I didn't have the time or know how to adjust the valves myself). Once the valve adjustment was done, I drove my car home, but still noticed that the ticking was present...just not as loud.

I figured that the noise either:
A. comes from the crappy California 91 octane fuel.
B. or, comes from my fuel injectors that are just noisy (like I have read in this post and others over the past year).
C. or, comes from both A and B.
D. or, comes from the fact that my timing is messed up, I really need to find a mechanic that knows what he is doing (non-acura dealership technician), and basically I am screwed...which means Skunk2 upgrade!!!

I really doubt D. though since I have had the ticking for some time...and still no "Check Engine" light yet. Ha ha, I know...tomorrow morning I will go to start my car, and guess what light will be on...ha ha ha..."Check Engine". But I seriously doubt that too.

I once read a thread on here, that someone got fed up with the noisy Integra fuel injectors. I believe they tried to replace them with bigger Prelude injectors to alleviate the problem??? I am only assuming that this worked...I don't know though since I never heard if it solved the problem or not. Does anyone have any insight on whether or not this would work? Just curious...

HONDA/ACURA recommends a valve adjustment every 30k.
