Default Regular or Premium Gas - What do you think about this article?

http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caran...e_gasoline.xml

"but neither the BMW nor the Saab suffered any drivability problems while burning regular unleaded fuel. "

"Our tests confirm that for most cars there is no compelling reason to buy more expensive fuel than the factory recommends, as any performance gain realized will surely be far less than the percentage hike in price. "

What do you think?

for MOST cars, no. BUt for people running aftermarket and high compression pistons on higly modified engines, it does resist detonation.

i just say if you get knocks, then try a better gas other than that, my 6 does fine with regular unleaded.

Some of us can't just wait for knock, and when it knocks, get better gas.

But yes, I think the article is correct, a lot of people really don't need to run premium.

Just use the lowest octane gas with which your engine doesn't ping.

The article seemed accurate. High compression engines need high octane fuel.

so i should just keep running premium on my cars with high compression?? i guess thats what it means.....like i wouldnt have done that anyways. maybe i will start using the cheap gas for my daily driver cause im not too worried about performance. thought it burns cleaner, but oh well.

For your B18C hybrid, stick with 91+ octane.

For your 2001 Civic, use regular gas. In fact, using premium in that car will probably burn less clean than regular. I have a friend who tried some tankfuls of premium in his '98 Civic LX and he lost 2mpg.

Different octanes of gas have their different applications. Some newer cars have ECUs that advance timing until knock occurs to maximize performance. So, if you put higher octane in , you will get better performance- if you **** in the tank, you might not win the race. Most people here have modded or older cars with no knock sensor or disabled knock sensors. When it comes down to it, higher combustion temperatures need higher octane gas to prevent detonation- there is no debate on that.
