With proper maintainance, and not abusing it, it should give you a couple hundred thousand, if not more, trouble free miles.

Yup. Proper maintainance being the key.

I just had a 95 Del Sol VTEC ( B16A ) come in with 197,000 and still running strong. No rebuilds or major problems on that engine.

Proper maintenance of a good engine to start with is the key. You can even smash on it and itll last. Its a great street race engine in stock form. 5000 rpm really isnt high for that motor. Parts dont just wear out unless they have a ton of miles or you got no oil, then ur fucked

Keep in mind the kind of abuse people on here might be putting the engine through. I don't necessarily mean literally abusing the engine, but if you race it frequently as many people on a Honda enthusiast site might do, it's going to wear on the engine more than grandma picking up her meds from the Walgreen's down the street. Add to that people modifying them, etc. I think you get the point.

Honda engines are great, they seem to run forever if you treat them right.

its a Honda OEM engine? whats the question, just like any oem enginge with proper maintence it will last like any stock honda engine. on the other hand if you take a stock honda engine no matter what model d16, b16, b18 and dont maintain it and smash the throttle at every light then of course it will blow soon

Welll, when you start to modify the internals of an engine, that "OEM" realibility isnt garunteed. But, a stock b16 has no reason not to last 200,000m when properly taken care of.

I know a couple of guys who absolutely rape their b16a's [reving to 9000+, flatshifting etc] and the engines have been nothing but reliable. If you look after it well you should have a hard time killing it.

**** man, ive had my b16a for almost 2 years and i beat this thing down alot

its still running strong this whole time.

i drive 200 miles everytime i go to and from work (LA to SD)
and i rev this motor to 9k whenever i race

of course, i do the maintenance all the time on it

but it does look like ill have to retire it soon, the rings are going bad and im getting a bigger motor

Was reading (with help of asian friends ) a book purely on civics, a civic bible if you will from japan...... they claimed that the B16A is probably Honda's number one engine for longevity. They said with proper maintanence, 200,000 km was nothing for this engine, my friends then translated the next sentence, and it reiterated that these 200,000 km were purely based on a b16 that was ONLY TRACK DRIVEN, I was like WTF???

Thinking a bit more into it though..... some b16s that give up the ghost prematurely on a street car could be attributed to simple things like a bad batch of fuel and revving the **** out of the engine. Know it has happened here in Australia a few times, not just to b16 and other vtecs but other jap turbo cars, the past 2 years there has been big controversy over fuel companies dumping vast amounts of ethanol into the fuel they sell, and a higher incidence of engine faliures as a result.
