Don't use dishwashing soap, DON'T... In paint oils are used to keep shine and luster, dishwashing soap removes those oils, very harmful to paint. There are few oils in wax, so most of it would not be taken off anyway. To remove wax, use polish, then buff. Then reapply new wax. If you don't have the time to polish, then use a high pressure spray gun.

BTW, the idea of car wax it to create layers which protect your paint, keep your old waxes on unless you're showing your car or want to make it look great.

Products, Meguiar's #26 (yellow wax) and #7 (polish)

Use Mothers claybar. It strips the old wax off and makes the finish all smooth. Also comes with wax and detailing spray too....

Good call. I forgot to mention that. Clay bars are intended to remove everything from paint overspray to chemical fallout, things you cannot see in your paint, but are still very harmful.

Best idea to perfect your paint!
1. Wash
2. Clay bar
3. Polish - let sit for at least 30 minutes
4. Buff
5. Wax
6. Buff

Your paint will look brand new...

If you take a lot at my hondaprelude site (in my signature) with pictures of my car you will see how nice my paint looks. It is stock paint from 1990, the owner before had car my sitting out side for over 8 months, with no protection. The paint was being fading and loss of tone. I corrected it, people now think I had my whole car repainted.

dishwashing soap.
BINGO!!

then put a new coat of everything to have a CLEAN surface. THis is what most of the detail shops do. It's kinda like an OIL change to the paint! Good luck and remember to lay down some wax and polish.

Nope. Bad call. with the clay bar you are literally SCRAPING off not only old wax but also the clear coat. The guy is just trying to take off wax and you don't take off wax with Abrasives. Wax = Oil. when you wash the dishes you don't clean them with oil?? As long as he puts a new coat of wax and polish after the dishwashing soap then he will be BLINGING again! Good luck!

Default Wax

Your wax comes off anyway. After you wax your car you can feel the "smoothness" in the paint. After a week or two, and two washes with regular car-washing soap, one-to-two coats of wax will be gone.

You guys act like the stuff stays on your car forever. Not even the best polishes that "bond to your clear-coat" can claim that.

Wax is a temporary coat of protection.

Default Re: Wax

If you put sealant on top of your wax then believe me... that wax will go a LONG LONG way. The more layers of wax you put on it the more it bonds to the paint and the harder it is to take off in the long run if you want to lay down a completely new coat of wax!

The reason you feel that smoothness is because you've just added another layer of wax on top of that one. Unless you're talking about NON Carnuba Wax then yeah... it should not stay there for a long time but it's not the same for carnuba. Shoa it doesn't stay forever but like the original post stated.... if you want to put a NEW layer of wax on get rid of the old crud and contaminants from the car by first using dishwashing soap.

I can almost agree with you on the other ideas you posted, but a clay bar does not remove the clear coat. If it is used properly with the right amount of detailing spray then it is totaly safe, safer than the toxic chemicals that sit in paint.

Dishwashing soap is used by some detailing shops, with under experienced workers, or under thought. There is no reason to ever remove the old oils in paint. You want all the oils, so to speak, you can get in your paint. If you remove the oils with dishwashing soap, which what it is designed to do, then polishing with top of the line products CANNOT replace all the oils you lost in the first place.

I practise the same process but I use Maguire's Paint Cleaner instead of a clay bar. It's Maguire's 3 step process. Works great, but keep in mind it's pretty much an all day project unless you got a buffer. Might want to keep that in mind cuz' it's gettin' colder up in NY and waxing a car in 40 degree weather SUCKS!!

Thw wax is used to sela in the oils from the polish. you are removing the oils. I believe that it's a matter of prefrence on the clay bar, because from working at a detailing shop and having a friend, which has painted cars for over 15 years, let you know about products, I pretty much stick to his thoughts since he's been there and done that.

Just my 2¢on the clay bar. I love it but I don't use it regularly cause from the things that I have been told by body shops... it's NOT what you want to do all the time.

Peace!

Oh yeah, I know what you mean. Don't use clay bar on a yearly basis. It can only remove clear coat after a lot of use, and when the clear coat starts to flake it removes it.

I do however like the look after a car has been washed in dishwashing soap, then polish, wax, etc. But I fear it is very dangerious to paint. Even few minutes with out oils in paint can be harmful. If I ever plan on showing my car, that is what I would do right before, other than that, I don't plan on it. If you know what I mean. Peace...

MouhadIb: Thanks for all the imput, glad to see more members that have good amount of knowledge of car/paint care.

You can never know it all...

ok, here is the info I know
Clay bar- used to remove contaminents from the outer layer of paint, may remove wax, I was also under the impression that once you clay bar a car once you don't need to every again?
dish washing soap- not any works, you must use DAWN it will remove was and not cause and harm to the paint. I have done this to every car I own as old as the 60's new as 2001, it did not harm any of them
