Default Changed my Rear Differential fluid today......

and tranny fluid. Tranny fluid was normal. Car has almost 30K and its an 00. Not sure when they were last changed.

The diff. fluid was whacked. It smelled TERRIBLE, and had a really nice metallic shine - and the drain plug, covered in metal shavings.

Now I expected some metal, but is my situation unusual??

not unusual. The smell is the sulfer in the fluid, wear a mask as smelling that stuff over time will kill your sense of smell. As for the metal shavings, that is normal too, to a certain extent of course. You'll want to replace your fluid every other engine oil change or at least once a year and using a synthetic gear oil will help the fluid last longer.

my car did feel smoother. i changed mine at 15k miles. also, it was lesser noise while driving.

I used Valvoline 75W-90 synthetic, just for the moment. I plan to switch to LE 607.

Last month I changed my oil/tranny/diff fluid at 10k.....

Diff fluid was just as you explained. Metal shavings on the drain plug. Looked like coffee.

Tranny fluid still had the goldish color to it.

I switched to Mobil 1 10w30 motor oil and I havent burned any yet. 1xxx miles.

I used Mobil 1 75w90, and Honda MTF.... shifting seems to be smoother than it was before.

do you need to use a LSD additive for the rear end fluid?

No, an additive isn't necessary from what I've read.

not unless you have a clutch pack LSD.
