Default 5th Gear

alright i cracked my trans casing putting a drain plug back on so i jb-welded it until i had the time to drop the trans. i removed the trans took the casing off my self. Had trouble putting it back together so i brought it to a local shop they put it back together. Two days ago i put the trans back in the car got it running new clutch and flyweel and now i dont have a 5th gear.......

with the car off or not moving it feels like there is no 5th like its blocked off. With the car moving i can put it into 5th but it pops right out when i let off the clutch.

also when i put the car into reverse it gets stuck and i have to let off the clutch a little bit and slide it out.

the shop was a trans shop so i wasnt expecting anything to be wrong. I went back and they said to drop it out and bring it back to them so they can look at it. i never had these problems before and also when i got the trans back they left out the bolt that goes into the trans next to the upper trans mount. I think its the bolt that goes into the reverse idler so i put a bolt in that and its still the same.

sorry for the long post just a little pissed does any1 know what can be wrong before i drop the trans back out of the car again?

Sounds like a problem with the reassembly. Check the detent bolts, they are a hollow shaft bolt with a spring inside pushing a steel ball against the shift rods. This keeps each gear in place during operation. You can see them pictured here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=823627 under Dan GSR's posting. They are at about at the 2 o'clock from the drain plug in the picture, and are vertically oriented (right above the dude's right wrist). If the steel ball is there and the springs are ok, then there's probably something that wasn't installed correctly in the trans. Hope that helps.

Not off the top of my head. I have my manual at home and I'm currently at work (don't tell anyone). I can get back to you w/some detailed info, maybe tomorrow? Sorry, but I'm in the middle of getting my tranny back together for a track event next Friday!!! I'm stressing! But tomorrow, I should have time, if you're interested.

if u over tighten that ball detent thing, you will lose 1st and 2nd gear. maybe it's too loose and you're losing 5th and reverse? im still waiting for someone to give me the torque specs on it...

It could be one of those situations where they intentionally didn't put it together right, just so that they could be the ones who charge you to fix it. The theory behind it would be that since you worked on it first, any resulting malfunctions would be your fault and that they can't be held responsible.

alright i took out the spring bolt that is closer to the passenger side. Just about nothing came out.... then i pulled the one closer to the driver side and the fluid was going to pour out. I didnt get it all the way out becuase I didnt wanna waste the syncromesh is this normal for the one to have no fluid come out?

i could live with not having 5th gear for a lil while but now the clutch seems to be shot

if started in N car wont go into any gear, if started in gear car jumps and goes once moving i can shift with out the clutch rev maching and what not but if i hold the clutch down and step on the gas the car doesnt rev it just goes as if i was not steping on the clutch

i guess i am going to have to drop the trans next week......

You think thats bad...

I burnt up the tranny in my 96 ls. Ended up getting a 98 ITR tranny at the scrap yard for 1500. Drop my out, put the new one in. Filler up, and a puddle forms under the car. After careful inspection, I notice the casing is cracked, and it's leaking between the two halfs of the case.

Take it out, bring it back. They send it to a tranny shop where they open the case, weld the crack, and put it back together. Pick it up, and put it back in the car.

Everything seems good, then I notice a slow drip, which ends up getting worse. It's leaking from the brass cover that goes over the counter shaft snap ring. Tightened it up, but only after I started hearing grinding noises.

Take the tranny out, AGAIN (3rd time), bring it back in. They say the 5th and reverse syncros welded together. They cover all costs and when I get it back, it works perfectly.

Wrecked the car a week later...

Then I bought a new teg last summer. Sold the tranny to a friend to cover the cost. Motor went out, and I dropped in a B20. Boy I wish I still had that tranny to throw on the B20. LS gears are way too tall.

Well with this problem it sounds like your clutch (lol duh). Same thing happened to both my CRX and my DA. Clutch wouldnt fully disengage. Turns out a spring in the clutch disk popped out and was stuck between the plate and the pressure plate. What was the condition of the clutch when u pulled the trans? Is it a stock clutch or aftermarket/performance?

I would check detent bolts. If there is a washer that is missing off them then you will have that problem. Didn't here any noises do you?
