Default Head is caked with oil. Should I have it cleaned?

I was having a major oil consumption problem with my car. I pulled the head to replace the valve seals and the whole thing is caked with oil and carbon deposits. Is it worth the money to have it taken to a machine shop to be cleaned and inspected?

bah, clean it yourself, you could just pull the head and soak it in gas/mineral spirits. Then pull it out and wipe it clean, you may even need to use carb/choke cleaner while rubbing it clean, you might wanna replace your oil seals if you use something harsh on it to clean it. I'm hoping it doesn't look like this

When they're that bad just drive em till they drop and put in a used engine. All that crap in there destroys them. I hate it when people don't change there oil.

under all that oil and carbon theres a fairly inert metal, soak it in some degreaser and clr in a sequence, scrub a little with a brass wire brush.

Ya but I'm worried about messing up the head. Carbon deposits don't come off very easily. I'm just going to have it glass beaded and hot tanked.
