Default How much boost is safe for a stock ls

Looking at adding some boost to my 2000 ls. Does anyone know how much boost is safe for the stock motor, or should I spring for better internals just to be safe.

I think it's about 8 psi. You should check with whoever is making the turbo that you plan to buy just to be safe. I'm pretty sure that's what the greddy kit says to boost it at with stock internals but you're always better off building up your internals.

It all depends on the tuning. I've seen stock LS's with awesome tuning hold as high as 14 psi or more. But with crappy tuning, it could blow up with only 4 psi.

Yeah the first and foremost important thing is your fuel management. This will determine the range fo boost you can run safely.

Second I would necesarrlily use boost pressure as a guide to safe or how much you can run. Power is a better rule to follow. See a small turbo takes more boost to make the same power as a bigger turbo, because the bigger one flows more air. So 15 psi on a small turbo may make the same as an Sc61 would on let's say 11 psi.

Also tuning will affect this as well. If your tune is real agrresive of course it will make more power, so you want to be careful you dont take the motor to far.

My suggestion is find what others have done, and how they have done it and go with what works.

I am running 1 bar(14.5) psi daily. My tuner was very conservative on my timing, and my a/f is right at 11.8. There is more power in my setup no doubt, but we wanted my motor to last.

My #'s are i my sig. I could have made 300 easily on my boost pressure, but like I said the tuning was conservative

Since your car is practically new, I would suggest just buying a Greddy kit and just run the blue box til you gain enough knowledge. Then start upgrading from there since your car is a obd2. And it's really not the amount of boost you run it's the amount of whp and tq that a motor can handle to be safe.

i would say your safe till about 12 psi with good tuning but to keep it safe i'd run like 8- 10 dyno tuned.

Do your internals just to be on the safe side.

Why? when he can take that money and do a obd1 conversion, buy a hondata, have it tuned and dynoed for the price of the new internals. Why fix something that isn't broke .?

I like the way you think, I mean why waste the stock motor, it wil take some abuse trust me. I mean and another thing is Boost isn't something you want to get into and immediatly try to build some 400+ hp machine. It takes alot of time and research, and learning, and 400+ hp cars aren't built overnight,so unless you have a Fat *** Pocketbook and a Good mechanic start small, learn and the aim big.

I would rather boost the **** out of the stock motor, learn the ins and outs, and when it blows have your motor that you've been building ready to drop in. Mistakes in the Boosted world are costly so learn and then spend $$$$

to be on the safe side... 7psi is recommended. that gives you over the 200+ hp mark.
