My engine seems to be squealing... however, not all the time.

On a cold start, occasionally the engine squeals (I guess it's the belts). A friend of mine told me that it might be the bearing on the pulleys that are worn, is this the case? I haven't change the timing belts recently and they don't need to be for a while.

What are the possible reasons, and how could I be rid of this annoying noise?

 

Put your ear by your distributor and see if it is coming from there. Could be your water pump. Could be your cam pulleys. Also might be your alternator.

 

Well, the water pump was changed too, so I'm hoping it's not that.

Try moving all your pulleys side to side with the car off.....if they seem to have play in any of them then it could be a bad bearing.....althogh you've done the WP, check it anyways cuz i've seen defective ones put on before.....tighten your belts as well.....HTH

 

mine does the same thing when it's cold, but i think it is my pulleys, but i will check everything u all said

 

90% chance you need new belts.

give them a brief inspection and look to see if there is any cracking or glazing.

 

How exactly do you check the noise from the WP?

 

oh, you can also (when the car is making the noise) hold a crayon to the belt (basically coating the belt with some wax) if the noise goes away, it is the belt.

also, if you have some extension for your socket/ratchet set (or any other skinny, yet rigid long piece of metal) carefully place it on the area that holds the idler pully, now carefully put your ear on the other end of the ratchet extension, if it is making weird noises the bearings are gone in your idler pulley.

 

On the underside? Or on the top?

 

and if its his cam pulleys, like mine are, would getting a set of aftermarket ones solve the problem?

(id look this up in my helms, but i just saw the thread and im at the computer lab at school, so dont flame me. btw, i hate writing law papers! )
