Default Not really theft prevention... but a good idea none the less?

How's this for an idea.

It's obvious that nothing can stop thieves. People post on the board about their R's being stolen despite all the security precautions, alarm systems, and immobilizers. If we can't beat them before they steal an R... what about AFTER?

My Thoughts:

What about a 24 hour video loop, with a camera pointed at your R or in your garage pointing in its direction, preferibly with a good shot at the driver's seat. If your R gets stolen, you'll know about it long before the video loops and overwrites the thieves. Turn the tape over to the cops, get a positive ID on whoever stole your car...

Even if you don't get it back, you know what the ****** looks like to beat the **** out of them if you ever see them again.

Ehh... could be impractical, it's not really prevention, but it would be good to have some sort of recourse when your car is stolen other than calling the cops and saying "Hi, my car is gone."

How much could the equipment cost for a 24 hour camera taping your R? Few hundred bucks? It wouldn't have to be color, just enough to get an image...

*shrug*

Just an idea, post your comments

I still think my idea od razor sharp deploying spikes on the seats would be a great theft deterrant.

NOt to mention then leaving a rabit rotweiler in your car everytime you keave the car alone.

Ever see the anti-theft devices in Brazil (I think? I saw it on 20/20 or 60 minutes or something) flamethrowers that fire from under the car...

Actually, this is a good idea because when the insurance company wants to pay on the claim, they will not have to investigate. A friend of mine who got his ITR stolen hasn't had his claim settled because of the "investigation". Maybe this kind of evidence will speed things up.

But, as you said, this is not theft prevention unless the camera is hooked up to some sort of motion detector that sets off an alarm within your house. Of course every stray cat would set off the motion detector !

Those are from South Africa. They also have a device that hides in the dash and sprays the face of the driver with pepper spray, activated by a remote control.

Actually, you don't have to mess with 24 hour loops. I have two cams on my R in the garage, as well as a few other around the house and yard. They are all connected to motions sensors that initiate the recording function on my inside VCR. Very user friendly, and if there's no motion, there's no recording. All wireless, too, so if the thief sees the cam and destroys it, the image is still on tape inside.

It's also fun to leave them running during the day to see what the pets are up to, heh.

Why don't you guys just take a part off your car when you park it at night.

Like the steering wheel, the battery, one of the wheels, the bottem end, etc, etc... ?
