ok check it if he isnt' getting spark thru his wires it is the dizzy. he might have a sensor loose inside the dizzy and that is why it isn't pickig up= . hell i just rebuilt my dizzy and my sensors were coming loose so i jb welded those bitches
Hmm that happened too me once when the little metal capacitor on the distributor got brittle and the wires cracked on it. It should be bolted to the distributor, check it out.

had this same problem on my zc, she would start then die....etc etc...it actually turned ou to be the distributor. had a loose connections and was arcing. casue all types of unhappy **** to happen. ever try swapping to new distributor, not a used one, but new...
Woo-Hoo! 50 bucks!.. I'm in.. move over girls!
Simple test.. take off the oil filler cap on top of the valve cover to see if the cam is spinning while trying to start the car...

Trinity - we checked all the sensors in the dizzy and even had a known good dizzy to drop in but still no spark. I do have some JB weld but I usually make that my last resort.
dustin - I believe that we tried a different cap when we swapped out the dizzy but I'll take a look to be sure.
91efzc - I don't have a new dizzy to try but I'm very sure that my second one was working fine. Could be bad but I'd like to rule out everything before spending alot of money.
Breakstuff - the cam is spinning. If that wasn't the first thing we checked it was the second. The dizzy is also spinning but not transferring the spark to the plugs.
Alright, I think I answered everyone for now. Here is some info that I'm looking for that might help.
1. The relay for the fuel pump is not turning on (no click) when the key is on. Where does this relay get its power to activate? Ignition switch? I've replaced the relay with a new one with no luck. The relays are working but they just don't seem to get power to switch them on.
2. How can I hook something up to the dizzy to see if the coil is firing and possibly just not transferring the spark through the rotor to the wires?
3. Where can I find detailed electrical schematics for the 89 CRXsi? I have the Haynes book but the schematics are pretty much limited to the cars up to 87.
My best guess is that the fuel pump relay has something to do with the problem. I think that the power source for the relay probably controls more devices because I don't think that the ecm is on (no LED with or without jumper under the hood). This could explain why it looks like a dizzy problem. The dizzy is not receiving signals from the ecm to tell it when to fire. Schematics would be a huge help.
Thanks for everything so far, I'll be working on it later so keep the info coming.

Honda's are notorius for blowing main relays. They are about $45 from the dealer. It is located under the dash near the coin box. Listen to see if it clicks

I think I know what it is.
Look at the clutch pedal, then follow the pedal arm all the way near the top.
There is a little rubber pad that actuates a switch as you step on the clutch pedal.
over time, that llittle pad can break and fall, so it won't actuate the switch.
Long shot, but worth checking it.

Good point, But much to my dismay we JB welded that a while ago, and believe me you it took two days to figure that out, thanks...
I've seen 88 series Civics with a rough idle due to a diminish in spark.. This was caused by the engine compartment wire harness flexing whenever the car was started.. The location of the of problem within the wire harness was always the same spot.. The main wire harness, just underneath the dist. assy. where it wraps around the bottom of the intake manifold.. To duplicate the good spark/bad spark condition was a matter of slightly pulling up on that harness..
there is a way to determine if the coil and igniter are receiving the proper signal to throw spark via the ecu input from the cyp sensor.. but thats another test and I need to get some sleep or else i might give some wrong info..

Check these:
Ground at the thermostat housing- remove it and clean it
In the dash fusebox- look for the fuse that is labeled "solenoid" and check it- see if it has power. I THINK it is fuse 14.
does your check engine lite come on for a few seconds and then go out when you turn the key to on? do you hear the fuel pump run?
be sure fuse 37 (15A) in the under hood fuse box is ok and has power
hazard lites work?
with the key on do you have voltage at the Coil? both + and - terminals?
Check these and get back to me.

So, do you have fuel pressure? or no spark?
I just replace my fuel pump in my 89 crx si. It had power at the pump but it wasn't turning on. And easy way to check for fuel is either at the fuel filter or fuel rail. Disconnect the line and crank it over. Any fuel? Oh, be careful for spillage. Use a milk gallon or something.
Spark? Sounds like you been down this route already.
Good luck
