intake for 89 legend?
you can take your current intake box and arm(black tubing). pull the arm and box off the intake manifold. not too hard, it should just slide out. remove the bottom half of the box and take it out of the car. then, buy a k&n filter (oem size or known as drop-in filter) and somehow attach it to the underside of the top half of the box. and then put the arm back onto the manifold.
it will give you the same affect as a short-ram intake.
but, like an intake...won't give much power. just better throttle response and a cool sound when you get on the gas.
(this is for an integra, hopefully a legend will be similiar) to make a cold air intake. get some tubing or dryer(the kind you dry your clothes in)ducting. remove the box completely from your intake. fabricate a joint to hold a conical filter to the ducting. then run the ducting through a hole where the original intake box was and run it down behind the bumper. then attach the ducting to your intake arm. major downsides, you won't be much better off than the other type i posted above. you take a chance of sucking in water or moisture and causing major damage to your motor. it costs a little more and take a little more time to work on.
a third alternative, go on ebay and look for generic legend(specify the year, because the engines in each generation is different) intakes. those will work just as well as a name-brand piece and should fit without any problems.
also, is you car a v6 or 4-cyl?

it is safe to do. it will dirty up your filter quicker. if you get a reusable, like k&n, just clean it once a year. and shake it out once in a while. you'll be ok.
