Valve clearance -> power loss: who can figure this out?
Hi,
I have a 99 accord EX coupe, which was running fine, the engine was making a little tapping noise, so I took it to a dealer for valve adjustment.
After the adjustment, the car's power, acceleration, mileage dropped drastically. Mileage went down from 32 on the highway to 26, the car seemed sluggish on every gear.
So I took it back and the dealer claimed that 21 was the normal mileage (those F&^** can say that, but I know better.
So I went to work and redid the valve clearance myself. All the valves were out of spec by .002 to .003 inches.
The engine has grown appreciably smoother now and really quiet, but the original problem of sluggishness still remains ( I have not checked mileage yet)
What could be the problem? The engine seems to be revving higher when I press the accelerator but the car is not accelerating..
What should I try? Check the clutch? Check engine compression? Any suggestions? Or is the valve adjustment still incorrect? (I did it as perfectly as possible)
The specs I used are .009- .011 inches on the intake and .011 - .013 on the exhaust (as in haynes manual for F23A1) is that correct?
Need some input on this problem.
Thanks
Rao

I had exactly the same thought.. but the clutch does seem to be fine, when I push the gas in first gear, the wheels squeal on the road. Is that a sufficient test or should I try something else too?

See if it will chirp second.

Well, it is not really spinning the wheels on first either now, just a small squeal.. Also, what do you mean by chirp on second?

chirping the wheels at 2nd gear... most accords should be able to chirp 1st and 2nd easily..
