i just preped and painted my turbine housing.

i did not disassemble the turbo,

can i put this in the oven for curing or will i damage the internal parts. im assuming everything the the turbo gets super hot anyway. so why not.

but i just wanna make sure..

That paint is going to burn off really fast. At night if you run your car hard then park the car, pop the hood and look at the turbine housing it will be glowing red.
Powder coating might be able to withstand the heat but not paint.

That would depend on how hot the oven is. I hope that much was obvious but I would say no more than 250*. Of course you could put the wrong coating on the right way by taking the housing off. It's very simple and rusted bolts should be your only problem. unfortunaly it won't matter when your paint just turns brow and falls off first day boosting.

why only 250 in the oven

if you turbo gets hot enough to burn off 2000 degree paint. why can it not stand 250 degree oven temp. it's the same thing right >?>>

i painted my turbo and charge piping downpipe all with stainlesssteel paint and put the pieces in the oven for ten min @250 bake looks cherry and no peels

 

what was the temp rating on the paint..

I wouldn't put the whole turbo in the oven. If you really want to bake it then take off the turbine housing. It's easy.

i dont understand why some people are saying that they wouldnt put their turbo in an oven.. the turbo it self hits temps that an oven cant even come close to hitting. so me personally i wouldnt really worry about it going into an oven

 

Yea, it shouldn't hurt anything but I've never heard of anyone doing it so...

Only the turbine housing gets really hot, the compressor side is much much cooler. I don't know the exact temp, 100-200 degrees? Just a guess.

 

Of course the oven wont hurt anything.
What color did you paint it anyways - Yellow?

 

The compressor side gets much hotter than 200 degrees! The air coming out of the turbo at 30psi of boost can get over 350 degrees! I wouldn't spend too much time on the paint, I don't think it'll stay very long. What you want to do is ceramic coat it, it won't come off and it will retain heat, which is a very good thing on a turbo...

 

dupli color sells ceramic coat in a can to stand up to 1200degrees F and looks better than VHT, my camera is broke so no pics....sorry.

If you're tuned right, then you should get hotter than 1200 deg....

 

Jesus, I see temps close to 1400 two inches down the downpipe.

you are exactly right except that the crucial point of this thread IMO is that the paint will burn off, so all the other points are moot from that perspective.

Also i doubt that the compressor cover and back plate get much over 200* (correct me if i'm wrong). the compressed air may be 350* at 30 psi but the housing is also pulling in cool ambiant air. Plus the center section has oil that is under 200* flowing through it. i bet the outsie of the housing is under 200. I know I can touch one bare handed after boosting 10psi so that is probably 120ish. just thinking out loud...in print, whatever

And you miss the crucial point that typical turbo temperatures after you idle for 30 seconds and shut the vehicle off exceed 250 deg F.

I like Bailhatch's line of thought. Anyone with a pyrometer who can measure compressor housing temp?

 

FYI.

i just let the car warm up. shut off. then i went out boosting

i ran 5psi all weekend, EGT temps 1200-1400 and so far the paint looks great.

ill let you guys know when it comes off.

 

If you take a good quarter mile pull, or a pull like that at a higher power level/retarded ignition, I think you'll heat soak the manifold and start burning paint. My opinion, I have no experience with the paint you used, just going by a little common sense and what your paint was labelled.
