Is fixing a crank shaft oil leak at home ludacris?
I have not pin pointed where the leak is coming from, but it is definitely coming from the crank shaft area becuase the oil gets splattered everywhere from hitting the belts. I've heard that is can be common for an oil leak from this location. I have a pretty full shop with a motor lift and stand and just about all the air tools that i need. I don't know if you have to pull the motor to fix this leak but i just assume you must. I'm not sure if there are special tools for taking off the pulley, i'll buy whatever i need to do it.
Is this something i should attempt to do over my spring break or should i give in and take my car to Acura. It's a 1992 Integra GS-R
It would be great if some of you smart people could give me a headz up on this, Thanx!

if you have all that stuff then i'm sure you'd be fine doing it at home.
it seems like you could do it without taking the motor out because you can change a timing belt without taking the motor out... all the same parts are coming out

it sounds like the main crank seal, it isnt hard to change once you have the pulley off.. so if you can get the pully off im sure you can change the seal as well..
no need to pull the motor, i had my mine changed when we did a timing belt/water pump..

you can rent crankshaft balancer pullers from most parts stores.
take out the bolts holding the tranny to the block, push the tranny back as far as you can (while everything is supported up top) and put a wood block in both sides to keep it that way.
take off wheel and inner fenderwell and take off pulley and balancer.
drop the oil pan, pop the piston rods loose and push them up in the bores out of the way. pull crank/flywheel/clutch assembly down. replace both crank seals, replace all lower rotating assembly bearings (might as well...good insurance anyway).
re-assemble. remember to pop the valve cover and get the timing belt lined back up.
this is what I did in my driveway with a 40 piece craftsman toolset, a set of 1/2" drive sockets with an impact wrench, a crank balancer puller, and a torque wrench...

Nice work stackz!!
I bet you could rebuild an engine while it is still in the car. Actually, that might be the only way I could do it in my present situation. I have heard the hardest part is keeping everything clean.

You're nice but I doesn't seem like he has that much motivation if he's considering taking the car to the dealer.. Plus he said oil gets all over the belts so Im guessing its the drivers side seal that's leaking.. no need to drop the oil pan, tranny and all that other fun stuff...
True that...i'm on a bit of a budget so for now it will just be the seal, but it's nice to know that i don't have to pull the motor.
Thank you everyone for the advice.
Does anyone know if have to get any specialty tools to take off the pulley?
I paged through a service manual and it seemed like you need a special tool to fit into the hex in the center of the pulley. Has anyone done this before and know if you need the tool or not?
