Default Help on Type R 5th gear swap from GSR

Now I'm in for it. I wandered up to my local acura dealer to order the GSR 5th gears for my R, and they threw me a curve. Maybe one of you guy's can answer this for me.

I am swapping the GSR 5th gear into my 2001 R. The dealer says that the GSR gear(s) are the same for 94 to 00, but change part numbers for 2001. What I need to know is which GSR gears should I use for my 01 R tranny? the 94 to 00, or the 2001? Are the R transmissions the same for all years? If that's the case then probably the 94 to 00 GSR gear is the correct one.

I just don't want to order and swallow the wrong part.. Thanks

23461-P80-V00 for the counter shaft
23581-P80-V00 for the main shaft

honestly i'd leave it alone

Why would you want a GSR 5th? I'm running an ATS FD and I couldn't imagine killing my 5th gear acceleration by putting a GSR 5th in. Oh well, to each their own.

HEY dont listen to them. You want a GSR 5th gear..

because i have one.. .. lying around. I just swapped it out for an LS one, and it is kinda long, but bearable. If i had to do it again, i would just leave the gsr one in there on my gsr tranny, but too late. So.. if interested lemme know. They are just lying around. Hows $50 shipped?? I posted on classifieds, but nobody was interested. user name is mingchi69 on ebay if you wondering how reliable im.

counted the gears.... countershaf gear has 26 teeths and the mainshaft gear has 33 teeth which the ratio .787, the gsr gear ratio.

You definately need to do this mod.. it's the best mod out there... , well n e waz.. lemme know if you're interested.

Hmmm... Can't remember the last time my 5th gear acceleration pinned me in my seat anyway. My understanding is with the GSR 5th you still fall into VTEC on your shift at redline in 4th.. , so it shouldn't pull any worse than it does now with the stock tranny gear and no ATS...I've driven both stock gears and the ATS, and the idea of running in VTEC for 8 or 9 hours on the highway makes my head ache already! If I don't like it, I can always switch back.

Hey mingbling, what year is your GSR? Your price sounds yummy! I haven't run across you on ebay, but then you probably don't buy or sell Lotus parts! I'll check the part numbers provided above and see what year they corrospond to..

Was the changeover easy?

if your doing the 5th gear stop, why not go with the ls fifth. Little less revs on the highway is a good thing.

I believe the lS gear will drop me out of VTEC on the upshift, so it's a bit too high. I just want to have close to the highway rpm that I have now..

I can understand how most people think this is a silly idea. If I raced the car
( ever ) I would leave the gears alone and just do the ATS, that would make sense on longer tracks. But how often do you really need to pin the throttle in 5th gear for any length of time on our public highways? I should be able to get well over a ton out of the first 4 gears, and by that time I'm just asking for a ticket or a mishap of some sort..

right?

it is out of a jdm 95 jdm gsr.
To me, a fifth gear is only for cruising, and i never race past the redline of 4th, i think thats suicide.
I kind of regretted going with an LS 5th gear cause i use it to cruise around town at 40mph, and it is too low, puts too much stress on my motor.. but o well. My loss is your gain. Highway rpms r nice though.
The install is simple. pop the 32mm nut off the countershaft, press out your 4th n 5th gear together as an assembly.. pop the gsr 5th gear on n press it back on, torque the 32mm nut. On the mainshaft, if you're lucky, u can just slide the 5th gear off, if not, u will have to use the press.
If there is anything that might need replacing might be the 32mm nut. I chose not to replace it, but it wouldnt be a bad idea to replace though.
regarding what yr gsr, i believe all gsr 5th gears are the same. I really not sure why your dealer pulled up a different part number for a 01 gsr, but im 100% sure that this 5th gear will fit your ITR transmission. What defines the gsr 5th gear are the ratio, which i counted to be .787
Get this.. and your engine will thank you. hahha..

If I want short gearing I just have to drag out the Lotus, with it's semi close box, or even better the Cortina.. 4.30 FD with a close ratio box.. first gear is a royal pain in traffic, lots of clutch slip, but the shifts are very short. The R is just for running around...

mingbling...sounds good to me, you have mail!

Do NOT get the GS-R 5th gear if you plan on tracking your car and need to use that gear. I originally put in a JDM FD in my R along with the GS-R 5th and I couldn't stand it shifting from 4th-5th and the car just fell dead.

With the Type R 5th gear it will accelerate noticeably faster IMO. If you want to save gas mileage and not have the car be so loud on the highway and plan on not tracking it, then yeah the GS-R 5th gear is nice.

Hi Daniel! Good to hear from you! Yes we are finally going to add a little zip to the old R! I'll let you know when we are swapping out the bits.. The beer is always cold here and I work better with an audience! Ha ha..

How are things with you? We have to have a meet this spring for sure!

Ya...I'll bring beer too

The type R guys in Vancouver haven't had a meet since summer of 2002, so we definitely need one this year

MY JDM ITR trans has GSR 4th and 5th with a 4.785 FD and I love it. As long as you're doing about 35-40mph, you can still accelerate in 5th without downshifting (Not saying that it'll throw you in the back of the seat or anything, but it does accelerate )

you are really really a panzy if you put a gsr 5th gear with stock FD

i had the gsr 5th gear in an R tranny with ats 4.9 fd and it was decent but after the fact I would have liked a itr 5th gear

you are waisting your time and money by adding a gsr 5th gear

either listen to me now and keep your stock 5th gear, or realize in about a month or so that you are waisting your money.
take your pick, either way you wont like the gsr 5th gear

Just wondering Bob-DC2, but do you know what your top speed is with your setup?

depends upon

final drive, tire/wheel size, redline of engine and other factors

usually its plenty higher than what is needed

very few tracks unless you have 400+whp will allow the car to reach its top speed
