itr trans w/ gsr 5th and reverse gear problem
I have a 97 ITR trans 4.40 FD. I swap out the ITR 5th gear for a GSR 5th. I pulled everything (gears, syncros, slider, bearing) from the GSR 5th and Reverse out from the GSR main/counter shaft and put it onto the ITR main/counter shaft. Everything was working fine when I first droved the car, all gears shifted smooth and was running good for about a week, but just tonight I notice that it was difficult to get it in 5th and Reverse. The ITR 1st-4th gear shifts very good, but once you get to the GSR 5th gear, it will not go in, you would really have to force it to go in, but it's also weird cause when it wants to work, it goes in 5th perfectly.
Was there anything I should of look for, check clearence or anything when installing the gsr 5th and reverse? I need help trying to figure this out if anyone can help. thanks in advanced

Re: itr trans w/ gsr 5th and reverse gear problem
1: when I step on the clutch pedal, put it in 1st gear and quickly putting it back in nuetral and then release the clutch in a faster motion then i would hear the clunk noise.
2: when comming to a stop, with the tranny in nuetral, i would hear a few clunking noise before the car completely stops, then the clunk would go away.
also it seems like 2nd gear does not smoothly go in, but it does not grind either on low or high rpm.
I believe i put 2 or 2 and a half quart of 10w30 motor oil. whats the requirement btw??

2.3 quarts on a fluid change and 2.4 quarts after a rebuild
As for 2nd gear it can be an issue with the 1-2 sleeve assembly. As far as the clunking..hard to say without hearing it and seeing it first hand. Could range from a TOB to an internal shaft bearing to a bad differential bearing. Did you have any whining or noise issues other than that?

Yes its a tad too much but not gonna cause those issues you are having. Overfilling the unit may cause sealing issues but, its not overfilled by much. If you want to be 100% sure of the correct fluid level: Put vehicle on level surface..remove fill bolt and allow excess fluid to pour out until it stops and that will be the correct amount of fluid.

Re: itr trans w/ gsr 5th and reverse gear problem
update,
i took off the trans and poped it open and found 1 of the 3 10mm screw that holds the shift assembly loose, retighten that 10mm bolt up clean and reseal the trans case and put it back on, now tranny shifts like butter.
