I change my oil every 3K even with Mobil 5W30 Synthetic. My B18C5 does use a bit of oil too, but it does not smoke at all.

For the record my B16A2 hatch uses normal non-synth 5W30 as does my 11:1CR D16A6 and neither uses one drop of oil - ever.

I'm thinking of switching back to regular motor oil for my B18C5...

A loss of oil does not always mean that the rings or valve guides are bad. You could also have a plugged PCV system, or even a leaking PCV system. Check the condition of the Oring on the back of the breather box and make sure its sealing correctly and hasn't hardened up. Make sure the PCV valve rattles when you shake it also. If it doesn't, replace it. If you still think its your rings then I would run a compression test next. This will help you to pinpoint the problem to either the rings, or the valves.

Install a catch can, you'll find where it's going. If you drive the car hard (high revs) you'll likely burn through quite a bit of oil, it's normal, and unless the car is smoking you're alright. Might as well run a compression test to double-check.

conventional 5w-30 is probably one of the worst oil grade available. if you look at the used oil analysis section on bobistheoilguy, youll see that a lot of 5w-30 conventional viscosity analysis comes back as a 20wt. it isnt very shear stable b/c of the amount of viscosity improvers used in that particular grade.

I used to burn a little oil in my Sol when I used synthetic. I switched back to regular oil and it seems to be better.

most manufacturers say that burning UP to 1 qt every 1k miles is ok......for the record my b16a2 with 56k miles burns absolutely no oil and my jdm h22 with 42k miles burns about 1/2 a qt every 3k, using royal purple 5/30 on both cars. IMO 1qt every oil change is absolutely nothing to worry about, just keep an eye on it like you should anyhow............................John

Its ok to burn alittle oil after 4,000 miles and especially if your beating on your car and racing it. I work at a mobil oil change place and synthetic burns off the fastest even though it has the best protection.

That is no big deal....I change oil everyday and almost every car burns alittle oil...if you want to slow it put 20/50 oil....it is alot thicker
