Burning lots of oil, or is it normal?
I know it's normal the Honda engines burn a little oil, but is this normal? I have a good 'ol d15b7. I went on a 100mile trip with the oil level almost at the max, and when I got back I checked the oil again, obviously after it cooled down a bit and the oil way WAY past the minimum dot, there was barley any on the dipstick. Any clue as to why it's burning that much? Thanks guys.

how many miles? you've probably beat the poor bastard to death.
between oil changes it should burn way less than a quart

Okay sorry, I fotgot to say that, the motor has 190,000km's on it which is around 118,000miles. Thanks again guys.
Oh and no it's not abused, I baby the car. Lol, it's only a d15b7 but I still take care of my stuff. Also I'm not the original owner, so I don't know how it's been driven in the past.

Thats not normal, especially for that engine. Engines that tend to burn oil are those with high compression. You should be loosing half a quart at the most between oil changes.

What do you think is the main cause to this? Is it worth to fix, or should I just pick up another d15b7 to replace it since they're cheap anyways.

It's probably the rings/walls or valve seals. New/used engine probably will be cheaper unless you plan to do yourself.

Allright thanks! Is there a way I can do a compression test myself? I know I can do a leakdown test myself.

Compression test easier then leak down test. Just remember to block the throttle open. I forgot to do did this once and couldn't figure out why my readings were so low, LOL.

Yeah burning over a litre of oil in 100 miles is ridiculously bad. My car burns a litre every 2000km or so (1600 miles) and that's still considered bad.

high mileage, high 'performance', high rpm motor=
valve seals, rings (may not, lower compression would net lower performance), or someone is stealing your oil

I LOL'd at the last part. Haha. But honestly for being a d15b7 it still has some power. I don't mean ***** off the walls power, but it's still decent. So that's why I was stumped, becuase I'm guessing if it was loosing compression it would also loose power?

Nevermind, becuase it could also the be oil ring that's not good and it's letting up oil into the chamber. I'm guessing.

holly hell thats a lot of oil for that low of milage. I didn't start burning oil like that until well over 200,000 and a second headgasket

Yeah I think I'll just save up some cash and drive it untill it goes ka-boom, then I'll pick up another d15b7 and just replace it. No crazy swaps here since this is my daily untill I can find another coupe or hatch.

Re: Burning lots of oil, or is it normal?
In my experience with working on cars I would say that most engines burn about a liter of oil between changes. Which isn't bad at all. My Honda burns roughly one liter every 2500 km's, so about 2 liters every change, which I know is more than usual but I always check it and top it up.
If you're burning more than a liter after 100 miles, then your motor is toast. No questions. That's 30 liters of oil at the least between changes. That's 9 times the capacity of your engine.
My advice: Drive it until it explodes and put in a newer (used) one.

Or try selling it to someone who might want to fix it themselves and with the money you get, buy yourself a new one. This way you might save another engine from hitting the dust. Now finding someone who will fix it themselves is another story...

Re: Burning lots of oil, or is it normal?
i seriously doubt you are BURNING 1 quart per 100 miles. If this is the case you would SEE(blue smoke) AND SMELL oil. It is most likely a leak.
here is a simple to test to see if youre burning oil in insane amounts:
warm up your car completely, stop somewhere safe and let the car idle for over 1 minute. Accelerate quickly and a puff/cloud of a blue smoke should appear if you are burning a lot of oil.

Re: Burning lots of oil, or is it normal?
After driving my JDM D15B with a Y8 Head I checked my oil after 1800 miles of driving it. pretty much just breaking in my clutch and all the gaskets and i checked the oil and its missing half a quart of oil. but i race mine and The y8 head with Pm3 piston causes high compression i don't know if this is why or the rings are bad.
