Default Settings for VAFC?

ok, i know how to install this bad boy. I'm gonna install it today. My question now is, what settings should i use? I heard that u need to go to a dyno to get the best out of it, but i wanted to hear what other people used for settings.

yea I just did one for the first time last nite....D15 w/D16z6 head.

The VAFC-II is such a pain, the translation is horrible and Apex'i customer support is next to nothing, cool product just overly complecated.

The first thing you need to do is set all the sensor numbers to out=6 in=6, the guy at Apex'i says that all Hondas are 6 in 6 out, whatever, do to the map sensor, then set your throttle setup, btw narrow means closed and wide means wide open throttle(wot), your tps should read somewhere in between 0-1 volt @ narrow throttle and 4-5 volt and wide throttle, get that setup and start with your Vtec engagement then move on to your A/F settings.

good luck oh and you should figure out a way to read your A/F by means of a gauge and wide band O2 or a dyno.

is there an option where you click to make vtec turn on? i'm not sure if my vtec is kicking in or not. I set the high and low cam to kick in at i think 5500 and leave at 4800.

stock sohc vtec is barely audible, but its there. you want noise, throw a cam in it, my stage 1 made a world of a difference, and sounds much better, vtec crossover is alot louder.

lol...i'm not crazy over vtec...but i'm trying to figure out if it's engaging or not....I looked at my VAFC, but the VTo/VTi just says "off" even when i put it to the test. So....there's something wrong there. then i tried listening for it....still no good....and for feeling it, i felt nothing.

You might want to check your connections. I have a VAFC II and its neat b/c when my vtec engages it has a green light that turns red when it comes on. very simple to wire just read carefully and double check b/c you never know. if your connections are good then check your VAFC, and if thats good then check your sileniod, and if thats good then oil pressure, and if thats god then take it to a pro.

yea everything is good now. i can hear it change now. Anyone know what the settings should be though? there's like an option where u can choose the % for H<<L and L<<H. i put the L<<H to 5 %. ... not sure if it'll do any good.

how about this question..for the Vtec engagement point, i have it set as.... Lo>Hi 5200 and Hi>Lo at 5100. Should i have the Hi>Lo at like 4800? or should i leave it at 5100?

what i did was look on your stock vtec info find the difference between the hi<lo and hi>lo and set the hi>lo where you want it and make sure it has same difference. for example my stock setting is hi<lo is 4950 and my hi>lo is 4100 so i set it as close as i could towards the difference (4950-4100=850) now i have it at hi<lo 5700 and hi>lo 4800 the difference is 850 but it only goes by hundreds so i put it with 900 rpms difference. i keep my setting as close to stock as i can till its time for dyno and tune.

Alright, normally I wouldnt respond to something like this because I see this and explain this everyday to customers, but I decided I would.

VTEC is something that Honda developed to make an engine efficient in LOW and HIGH rpm. There should be a smooth transistion when the cams switch lobes.

Ask any tuner or look at ideal dyno plots. You shouldnt need to "FEEL A KICK" when Vtec kicks in. If you do, your Vtec is set too high and your engine is wasting time in the LOW Vtec.

If your Vtec is set too low, you will BOG down your engine.

A lot of people think VTEC is like a power ADDER like Nitrous or something, so they think that setting it lower will gain them HP sooner. Its a technology that Honda developed that makes an engine efficient at High and Low RPM's.

Everyday, I use a metaphor for my customers that goes like this........

If you are walking, you only need to breathe through your nose ( nostrils ). Once you start running you will soon breathe through your mouth........

Opening your mouth wide open and breathing profusely while just walking will not gain you anymore strength. In fact, it may cause you to get lightheaded......hehehehe.

thanks for the explaination. Yea, when my VAFC tells me i'm in vtec, i can hear a little crossover if i listen hard. It does feel smooth when i bring it up to and past the crossover. So i guess it's fine now.
