Transmission "Notchy", Dealer Says Clutch is warn out?
Just wanted to get people's opinion on this.
Took my car to the dealer for some warranty work and mentioned my transmission was feeling notchy. They say it is because my clutch is worn and it is not disengaging properly.
I have not felt any slipping (tried putting the car in 5th gear and letting the clutch out and it stalled right away, so friction material seems fine).
The car only has 40K on it; is this not a warranty item? I could understand the friction material getting worn, but the do other parts really wear on the clutch?
They said $1400 to replace the clutch and resurface the flywheel.
What does everyone think?

Im gonna call BS. If the clutch feels fine, then its not a clutch problem. If the clutch isnt disengaging properly or fully, I think youll be able to tell and itll probably feel like crap.

Replacing the clutch due to wear is not covered under the warranty.
However, I would get a second opinion before doing so.

dealers are fucktards, they told me my whole clutch was gone and it was going to cost me $1500 to fix becuase the clutch disk exploded. I buy a new spoon clutch/fw/pp and find out that the spring on the pressure plate fell out and my clutch disk and flywheel wre absolutely fine.

I think good dealers - and there are are some VERY good dealer service departments - are great. And bad dealers... are bad.
Now, maybe we could get back to helping Chris with his transmission/clutch question, instead of hijacking the topic to slam dealers?

The dealer explained better when I picked up the car.
According to the "top mechanic" there he believes one side of the friction plate is wearing more than the the other side and that the side that is wearing more is dragging, causing the notchy feeling.
This kind of sounds like crap to me. Why would one side of the friction plate wear more than the other?

I agree get a second opinion somewhere. Is it notchy in every gear or just certain gears. Also that price is insane....definitely look somewhere else b/c like someone else said a brand new clutch, flywheel resurfacing and labor is around 800.
Some dealers and shops do a lot of internal transmission work, and some don't. Make sure you get your second opinion from a place that does. Like maybe that place that helped you with your brake problem.

First thing I would do is replace the transmission fluid and see how it feels. Just because a stealership says it doesn't make it true.

I agree, change the tranny fluid first...and make sure to use HG tranny fluid.

mine had the same thing ... then the clutch disc shattered and ruined the tranny... now i have to rebuild it... so word of the wise dont drive it anymore till you know what it is ... or you will be rebuilding like me

Its a pretty common problem. Pressure plate spring seats can loosen causing the drag. Could also be a cracked disc/ dislodged spring. Replace the disc/pp.

Enough drag to make shifting notchy is not nessesarily enough to feel the clutch slipping.</TD></TR></TABLE>
same thing happened to me.. I ended up with an Exedy clutch and Toda flywheel
I gave up on dealerships long ago..

Please get a second opinion, from a tranny shop.
Change the MTF if you don't mind.
As for D I Y, if you can spare yourself the headache then pay to have it done- maybe a friend who works for a big shop that can do side work and use the lift
IF your going to do it yourself, leave 3 days for your first tempt if on the floor.
Pay cash maybe 200-300 for labor.
And clutchcityonline.com has great prices and service.

haha oh ok I thought you just meant that when the clutch disc broke it ended up breaking the tranny
