Default speedometer going haywire

i got a 92 cx w/ a b18 in it... and like the other day it rained after it dryed up i was driving around 35 and it was fine then it jumped up to 100 and then back to 35 then to 45 then to 20 then went to zero and just stayed there...

also when im on the highway it does the same thing but when i play w/ the gas it jumps back up but it doesnt stay there it seems off... then it drops back to zero.. when i change lanes to the right it goes back to normal anyone know what is wrong w/ this???

i dont think it could be the cluster because ive gone thru 3 of them already and everyone has a simliar problem? do u think it could be the wiring?

Check the plugs on your VSS (vehicle Speed sensor) and the plug on your engine harness that plugs into it for corrosion.

I usually pack some dielectric grease or Vasoline in the plugs. this increases the conductivity in the plugs.

Lastly if you try that and you still get a whack-*** speedo try replacing the VSS with any 1992-1995 Civic unit - they are the same.

Don't know where your VSS is? I'll be back in a minute with a good picture.

Here it is, on the topside of the tranny near the rear tranny/motor mount bracket close to your firewall:

You remove the entire unit with ONE 10mm bolt. Usually the one you need to remove is longer/taller than the other two. It's by itself.

Does that help?

I have this problem too. I put a b18b in my 94 cx, I'm using a dx cluster with tach. My speedo works fine unless I am going 40-50, or 75. If I go either of those speeds, garaunteed, my speedo will jump around for a minute, and turn off within a minute of going that speed. It's a pain in the ***, since 45 is the speed limit on all the road on my way to school if I take the long way. I do 75 on the highway. So I just assume that I am going those speeds when my speedo goes off.

It's not your VSS... there is a piece on the back of the speedo assembly that plugs in to the guage itself which is causing the problem. I had this exact problem on my 95 EX. I got a donor speedo assembly from a CX and replaced this one little controller piece and it works fine now. I was even able to keep all my mileage. Take your cluster apart and look at the back of the speedo and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's a pretty common problem on 5th gen civics. Sorry if my post is kinda fuzzy on details, it's been a LONG time since I fixed this, but I replaced the VSS too like everyone else and still had the problem. Good luck.

My speedometer acted nutty for few months, then my distributor went up. Replaced the dizzy, solved my speedo problem too.

I have the same recent problem. Vss is good, all wires and plugs are good, cluster is good. Check all the wires going to the ecu. This was a problem my buddy had and it was a bad connection going to the ecu. But each situation can be different.

My speedo doesn't work on 96ex civic either. VSS seems fine. I'm going to replace the speedo if I can find one at junk yard.

Just pull the cluster apart and be careful. There's no needles to remove or anything like that, just three screws (if I remember right) to pull the speedo out and you're set.

Mine did the same thing jumped all over the place and 3/4 of the time never worked. replaced the VSS and it did the same thing. Then I said F-it and went to the salvage yard and pick up a used one. Haven't had a problem yet. I took mine apart too and cleaned it and never worked.

mine was jumping everywhere when my second o2 went out...the wires were all fried and thats what caused the spiking in the speedo. just something to check i guess...

I've had the same type of problem and now its fixed. I replaced the speedo with a used one. I checked everything and this was my solution. Probably will be yours also. Good luck.
