Default tech guru's need help:oil temp freakin out, checked the FAQ but no help...

scenario:
I drive my car like normal blah blah blah, no redlining, no vtec just a normal drive. When i come to a stop and let the car idle for a while (waiting for someone etc) the coolant temp gauge goes way past normal into the "hot" zone.

now if i just rev it for a while, the temp goes back to normal, and if i start driving again it returns to normal. Only time the temp gauge goes crazy is when i'm at idle. I checked the engine bay for heat etc, but it's ok.

Is this a thermostat issue or is it something more crazy? any help would be appreciated. TIA

IS the water temp doing the same?
How's your oil pressure while the temps rise and lower?

Last time you changed the oil?

what he said. i'm going to assume that it's your water temp gauge on your stock cluster since you didn't mention the actual temperature readings.

everything is stock?

i see, in that case.. make sure your coolant level isn't low, also do radiator fans come on? i'm guessing its thermoswitch.. others may help out with this better.

No worries. Everyone has one of those days.

Had to ask if you're stock. Some people forget to "bleed" their coolant when they swap out the thermostat or whatnot. Beyond that, I have no idea.

But at least this info will help out someone more knowledgable in this area.

hmm i'll check the coolant levels, but the fans don't come on, and the engine bay isn't even abnormally hot...it's weird cause it only goes up on teh gauge when i'm idle, thas what baffles me....

Does your car have AC?? If so turn it on and see if the secondary fan comes on.

My prelude did the same thing and it ended up being some sort of switch for the secondary fan..

The fans not coming on is not a good thing..

sometimes fans may not come on for a while.. like more than just few minutes.. first i'd check coolant level.. if you drained cooalant lately, maybe you have air bubles.. make sure coolant level is in between low/high in overflow tank.
