tranny removal... need help please (and how heavy is it):(
hi guys. i have did a search for tranny removal so i m not trying to be redundant here. i need an idea on how to remove the tranny from under the car. i heard u need to use a jack to holdup the engine, but how do u catch the tranny? how heavy is that thing anyways? do i use a 2nd jack or sumthing? i dun want to kill myself in the process. will any fluid spill out of it when i take it out?
thats about it. for how and where to unbolt, i got the helms to direct me on that. thanks everyone

ok.. so there's no way i m gonna catch the tranny from under if its about 80-100lbs. how able using a crane arm thing to support the tranny with chains and then lowering it slowly? thisway, i dun need to use a jack and all i need to do is get it to sit on a roller and roller it out.
exactly how high do i need to jack up the car for it to clear the bumper?
oh and btw, everyone's reply are very nice and informative. thanks guys

I destroyed my tranny at a race last year. Once I got the car back to the shop I removed the tranny, replaced the gearset and changed the clutch by myself. Yes, I had a lift but reinstalling a tranny without help isn't fun fun the first time. The entire procedure took a mere 2 hours to accomplish. I have also changed a tranny on jack stands but this takes twice as long since you don't have as much working room.
With a lift all you have to do is put the tranny on your shoulder and then align the input shaft with the clutch. One it is aligned I install the two top bolts and then the rest of the bolts.
With Jack Stands: install/remove the tranny with the help of a hydraulic jack.

sucks when it falls into your lap...

(Drain the transmission fluid before you remove the tranny.)
I've removed my tranny atleast five times now in my driveway with the car on jackstands. It's not too difficult, just time consuming. If you've got an old skateboard around, you can use it to easily get the tranny out from underneath the car. Just put the front of the car on jackstands, so that the car is high enough in the air that the tranny can clear the bottom of the car. HTH

if you can get a cherry picker or something, connect it to the lifting hook on the tranny, near the vent. Support the engine with a jack and the rest will fall into place. Be prepared to wiggle a lot. It's a satisfying experience to do that kind of thing by yourself. Good luck mang
Very easy ive done mine alot already. here is a quick Step by step right here........
1. disconnect battery, remove vss sensor, reverse sensor. unscrew clutch actuator line, starter pos wire, starter relay wire, tranny ground, i think thats all small wires,
2. tranny support brackets - under car, one has 2-12mm bolts and a 17-mm bolt, other has 1-12mm and 1-17mm. then remove plate that covers flywheel-2-10mm bolts.
2.5 drain fluid 17mm bolt above pass axle.
3. axles- 32mm i think is the axle nut..... do both sides, remove shock fork that connects to lower control arm 1-17mm bolt. Then remove the nut on the lower ball joint 17mm. pop off ball joint with a fork and a hammer. On drivers side there is 3-15mm bolts that are in the middle of the half shaft. both axles should come out with some leverage.
4. knock out pin in shift linkage(under a boot and a c-clip.) then other part of shift linkage which is a 12mm bolt.
5. unbolt all big tranny bolts 3-17mm on top, 1-14mm under starter( hard to find) 3-17mm under trans. in back of trans the rear mount has 2-19mm bolts, Unbolt support bracket on left front of trans 3-17mm and 2-14mm.
6. put jack under trans and unbolt the top trans mount one long 17mm then shake it until it breaks loose. it should do this without alot of force, if not you missed something. Carefull when lowering make sure you didnt miss a sensor connected and........
then your all done.

just take of all the bolts, flywheel dustcover bottom starter bolt then once there all out, the tranny will stay there on its own. then tie some ropes around it then wiggle it off and ez it down with your own strength its not that heavy.
Draining the oil first would not be a bad idea.
Get the car up around 20 inches or so.

That is where you fill the oil.The oil should be level with that hole.
The drain plug is on the bottom. look through the passenger wheel well the drain plug takes a 3/8 or 1/2 rachet.

You wanna talk about tranny installing fun? I burnt out the main bearing on the input shaft on my old 96 LS and ended up buying a 98 ITR tranny at the salvage yard for 1500. I put the tranny in and it leaked from the bottom, must have been from the accident the original ITR was in. Pulled it back out, brought it in, they fixed the leak. I re-installed it (2nd time), but they forgot to tighten the snap ring cover in the side. All the fluid leaked out of that side of the tranny and the 5th and reverse synchros welded together. Pulled the tranny out AGAIN, brought it back in AGAIN, and installed it AGAIN (3rd time). Drove the car for a week before I got t-boned totalling the car.
It gets better...
Two years later, I buy another Integra. End up selling the ITR tranny to a friend a week after I buy the car. Next week, the motor develops a nasty knock. End up pulling the whole motor to swap in a B20 (stock). Man I wish I would have had that tranny to throw on the B20, cause the gears are soooo much shorter than the LS tranny, and I had it all apart anyway.
