Default B16 vs. B18 (Opinions)

Ive heard that one of the only differences between the 2 is that the B18c1 has 10 more hp? Is this true?

And if not, which engine would you get? If it is true. is it really worth it to pay that much more cash for a JDM b18 then it is a JDM b16?

PLEASE read the forum rules listed at the very top of the topics list on page one.

There are literally a hundred or more topics about this exact sam subject.

I'll break it down to you in a nutshell:

The B18C1 will typically dyno about 10-15 more whp and at least 15-20ft-lbs. more torque to the wheels than the same modded B16A.

I personally owned a 1992 Si hatch with a B18C1 at the same time my fiancee' owned a 1992 Si with a B16A2. Same exact car, mods, wheels, tires, etc. just different engines.

Mine dyno'd 150whp, 121ft-lbs. or torque to the wheels.

Hers dyno'd 143whp and 102ft-lbs. of torque to the wheels.

What those peak numbers don't tell you is that the B18C1 outpowered the B16A2 by over 20whp and torque in the midrange, and the powerband of the B18C1 was way fatter overall than the peaky B16A2.

My B18C1 beat the B16A EVERY time anyone raced the cars against each other from any speed, mph, gear, etc.

The B18C1 is 1.8 liters, while the B16A is only 1.6 liters. The B18C1 will make more power and torque along a braoder powerband. The B16A has to revved to stay in its power band, but it does rev quicker than the B16A. The other glaring differences are that the B18C1 has a different head and a dual butterfly intake manifold, and the B18C1 has a slightly longer geared tranny because it has more torque and a broader powerband.

If you have any more questions feel free or IM me, and please try a search under archived topics using B16A and B18C1 as key words.

BTW:

Is the B18C1 worth the extra money over the B16A? IMO yes. It makes more power and torque, and unless you buy a B16A swap and then swap a 1.8L block under it or overbore the B16a to 1.8L you'll never make the torque that the B18C1 will make.

The real question is can you allow yourself to afford it without interfering with the rest of your life?
