Default JDM final drive affecting mileage

To those people with the JDM final drive: How has it affected your mileage since the car revs alot higher?

With a GSR 5th gear ($100) the highyway rpms will be the same as stock. A USDM LS 5th gear is also a possibility and will give even lower highway rpms, at the expense of a biggish gap between 4th and 5th gear.

Gas mileage of course will be a bit worse thru gears 1 thru 4...if you are constantly ******* it....but i dont think you will notice that much of a difference either way.

I still got like 25 or maybe it was 27 mph on the highway last time i checked...i cant remember now...i posted it a long time ago....but it still got relatively normal gas mileage for an R.

Its a great mod!

I'm totally FOR this mod and wouldn't change the 5th gear because thas when it starts to GET FUN (speedwise)

I've actually found no significant downing in mileage as far as I've noticed with the FD....I've noticed that the use of 15W50 takes more of a toll....anybody else exp. low mileage with thicker oil?

Ditto what he said... getting 20mpg+ on a "sport" car is a rare find. Have fun.

If you regularly drive in the 100mph+ range, yes. If not, an extra 400 rpm at highway speeds is the last thing the R needs. For me at least, it would make the car virtually unstreetable.

Lower milage due to thicker oil is expected, thicker oil causes more drag internally if im correct, thats why using synthetic 5-w30, they say you will get good milage. Even the owners manual states if i remember correctly for best milage use ____ oil.

I lost about 20 miles (32km) every tank, this is the average that i have noticed, since i drive harder on some tanks and sometimes i don't. City driving is about the same since u can cruise in 5th gear, but once u get on the highway the mileage is not nearly as good as with the good ol' 4.40 final drive. But the benefit of the quicker acceleration you get out of the 4.785 final drive will make me forget about the lost 30-35kms per tank any day. A definite worth-your-while mod especially with a 9-10LBS flywheel!!
