Dumb Question. but im new please forgive me.
First off i'd like to say that this is a great board with lots of good information.
Now with my dumb questions. ahem... don't hurt me...
How do i Know if my civic has VTEC. Well, aside from looking at the valve cover.
I ask this because I have a 2000 Civic EX. SOCH 1.6L, the valve cover, Dosn't have VTEC on it, but when I look up the VIN it claims that it has VTEC. I've tried listening for it, while i drive but im not sure if engages. (if i have it). So how do I know for sure?

your car should have vtec being the year and model, unless for some reason there is another engine in there..
are the sparkplug wires in the front or back of the valve cover'

The plugs can be at the front or the back of the valve cover. Usually when the plugs are at the front it has VTEC. Usually...
I have the same car as you, and yes, it does have VTEC. There isn't anything that says VTEC on the valve cover though. I couldn't hear mine engage until I got my AEM CAI, so if your car is stock, you won't hear it.
It doesn't 'kick in' like a turbo or anything like that either, it helps it make power at the top end, so you don't necessarily 'feel' it. Do a couple of runs to redline; then drive a 1.6L without VTEC, you'll be able to tell the difference. My lady's LX doesn't want to rev at all, and doesn't pull at all in the upper revs.

Well, i know the diff between a turbo, SC and VTEC. I just never owned a honda before. and wasn't sure how to tell if i had it. My friend has a 95 teg gsr. and it had VTEC on the valve cover so i figured if mine had vtec it would appear on the Valve cover. ok but thanks for the info i feel better now.

No prob. I wish it had a VTEC cover too. Oh well, I'll just have to save up for a nice B18 or something.

don't rule out the sohc. sohc's have way more potential than you think...espescially when forced induction is involved or they are in a light chasis. Your big problem is that yours is auto and doesn't have much potential at all. I would save up and do a manual swap
.
.
EX means you have VTEC, unless your car has a swap you dont know about.
check for the solenoid like mentioned above, you will have one.
you most likely will not hear VTEC kick in on a sohc, but it is there.

You could've just looked up the specs for your car via google or any other search engine. I personally would never buy a car not even knowing wtf is under the hood.
